Jonathan B. Nelson Esq. is a New York trial lawyer, Partner and Chair of the Litigation Department in the New York law firm of Dorf & Nelson LLP[1]

Early life and education

Nelson was born on November 3, 1968 in New York City and was raised in Pleasantville, New York, where he graduated from Byram Hills High School. He is a 1990 graduate of Brown University, where he was awarded a Bachelor of Arts in Economics and American & English Literature.

In 1993, Nelson received a Juris Doctor degree with Magna Cum Laude distinction from Brooklyn Law School.

Professional history

From 1993-1997 Nelson served as a Senior Assistant District Attorney in the Felony Trial Bureau at the Kings County District Attorney's Office, in the Borough of Brooklyn. He served in the litigation team that prosecuted Patricia and Betty Coker, who were indicted in the death of a foster child, Caprice Reid.[2][3][4]

Nelson, during his tenure at the DA’s office, assisted former Kings County District Attorney, Charles J. Hynes, and former Assistant District Attorney, Ama Dwimoh,[5] to form the Crimes Against Children Bureau.[6]

In 1997, Nelson founded The Law Offices of Jonathan B. Nelson, P.C in Manhattan where he practiced civil and criminal litigation until 2004. In 2004, he joined Compass Group USA Inc.[7] where he served as Senior Corporate Counsel (2004-2006) then as Assistant General Counsel (2006-2009). In 2009, Nelson joined Mamaroneck law firm, The Dorf Law Firm, LLP,[8] to head up the Litigation Department. In 2012, The Dorf Law Firm LLP was renamed Dorf & Nelson LLP,[9] after Jon. A. Dorf and Nelson formed a partnership where he is currently a Partner & Chair of the Litigation Department.[10] Since the formation of Dorf & Nelson LLP, prominent attorneys including Former Westchester County District Attorney, Hon. Anthony Scarpino,[11][12] Former First Deputy District Attorney, Paul Noto,[13][14][15] and Former Corporation Counsel of the City of New York, Michael D Hess (Retired),[16][17] have joined the Litigation Department.

Nelson has served as the lead trial lawyer in many significant business litigation cases. In 2013, he represented businessman, Robert Leslie Deak,[18] and his wife in a suit against Ground Zero mosque ex-Imam Feisal Abdul Rauf’s alleged misappropriation of donations case.[19][20][21][22]  He successful litigated a $7million dollar[23][24][25] intellectual property case on behalf of Graduation Solutions LLC.[26]

Teaching

Nelson was an instructor at the Brooklyn Law School Prosecutor’s Clinic[27] from 1996 to 1997; He was also a trainer at the Kings County District Attorney’s Office from 1995 to 1997; and was a guest lecturer at John Jay School of Criminal Justice from 1995 to 1997.

Nelson was an Assistant Adjunct Professor of Law at Brooklyn Law School in 2000;
