The National Anti-Terrorism Committee or NAC (Russian: Национальный антитеррористический комитет; НАК) is a federal committee tasked with combatting terrorism in the Russian Federation. It was formed officially on 15 February 2006 by the presidential decree of Vladimir Putin.
NAC is within the Federal Security Service (FSB), and the head of the FSB — currently Alexander Bortnikov — serves as chairman of NAC.[1]
Overview[edit]
NAC was formed in February 2006 by Vladimir Putin's Presidential Decree No. 116, "On measures to combat terrorism," with the goal of bringing together various government agencies in the fight against terrorism and extremist groups. The heads of each federal agency comprise the committee.[2]
The decree established a federal operation headquarters, with regional headquarters managing the counter-terrorist operations. Then FSB director Nikolai Patrushev was the first chairman of NAC.[2]
