Basic facts:
- Canada is the world's 6th largest energy producer (397.5 megatonnes of oil equivalent (16,640 PJ)), and 8th largest consumer (269 megatonnes of oil equivalent (11,300 PJ)).[1] The surplus is almost entirely exported to the United States, the only ajacent country. At the same time Canada imports oil because of a lack of west - east pipelines compared to north - south ones.
- Canadians use the 4th most energy per person of any country, 8.411 tonnes of oil equivalent (352.2 GJ) per person in 2004, trailing only fellow oil exporters Kuwait, the United Arab Emirates, and Trinidad and Tobago. The United States is slightly behind Canada in fifth, but Canada's usage is much greater than most other developed nations, and more than double Austria's (22nd, 4,060 kilograms of oil equivalent), and well above other vast countries, wealthy ones, and countries with harsh climates; nations such as Sweden (10th, 5,998), Australia (11th, 5,762), and Russia (16th, 4,460).[2]
