Miguel Ángel Gozalo Sainz (Madrid, November 16, 1938-December 20, 2023)[1] was a Spanish journalist.
Early life and education[edit]
Gozalo became interested in writing during his adolescence by writing letters to his mother while at boarding school in Germany. He later studied at the Escuela Oficial de Periodismo (Official School of Journalism) in Madrid.[2]
Career[edit]
Gozalo started his career in print media. In 1960, he worked for the newspaper SP. In 1966, he became the editor in chief of the news Agency Europa Press. In 1968, Gozalo became director of the evening newspaper Madrid; however, a year later, he transferred to another evening news publication, Informaciones.
Later, Gozalo joined the conservative newspaper ABC, becoming the correspondent for Bonn in 1972 and Paris from 1973-1974.
Between 1975 and 1976, Gozalo was the director of news for the Spanish radio chain SER. He also directed the radio program Hora 25.
In 1976, Gozalo made the switch to television. He became the director of the Segunda Cadena news program entitled Redacción Noche ("Editorial Night"), anchored by Joaquín Arozamena and Victoria Prego.
In 1982, Gozalo was named Director of TVE.[3] By the end of the same year, he served as director of the cultural awareness television program El arte de vivir ("The art of living"), presented by Victoria Prego.
In 1988, Gozalo became in charge of direction and presentation for the debate program Derecho a discrepar ("The right to disagree'"). The show was canceled in February 1989 and Gozalo was dismissed from his position due to a conflict with Luis Solana, the director of RTVE at the time.[4] The conflict arose from the last airings of Gozalo's program, in which details were mentioned about the personal lives of Miguel Boyer (the former Spanish minister of the Economy) and Isabel Preysler.[5]
In 1991, Gozalo joined the Cadena COPE radio talk show Cada día ("Every day"), hosted by Javier González Ferrari. During the 1993-1994 season, Gozalo returned to television on the Antena 3 network as a guest on the talk show Hermida y Cía, hosted by Jesús Hermida.
From 1994 to 1995, Gozalo worked alongside Pilar Cernuda, Fernando Jáuregui and Ernesto Sáenz de Buruaga on the Onda Cero radio program La Brújula ("The Compass"). Gozalo also wrote a column for the daily newspaper Diario 16 during this time.
In October of 1994, Gozalo was named an administrative board member for RTVE, nominated by the People's Party.
From 1996[6] to 2004, Gozalo served as the president and director of the Spanish news agency EFE.
