Trepany House is a 501(c)3 Arts Organization founded by Amit Itelman in 2012.[1] [2] From its inception, it has been housed at the Steve Allen Theater within the Center for Inquiry, Los Angeles property. Amit Itelman has been the artistic director for The Steve Allen Theater since its founding in 2003.[3]

Trepany House is currently without a performance venue as CFI Los Angeles sold their Hollywood property including the Steve Allen Theater in 2017, and have relocated to 2535 W, Temple St. Los Angeles, CA 90026.[4] The new owners of the site plan a demolition of the current building to be replaced with condominiums.[5]

Founding[edit]

Amit Itleman was the founding artistic director for the newly built Steve Allen Theater in 2003.[6] In 2012, Amit Itleman founded Trepany House as a 501(c)3 Arts Organization, using the same Steve Allen Theater from CFI Los Angeles for performances.[7] Underground Comic artist Robert Crumb designed the Trepany House logo.[8]

Shows premiered and developed at Trepany House[edit]

The Top Secret Brendon Small Experiment. The show starring Brendon Small, is a staged sitcom, where every week is a different episode.[9]

The Church of Satan’s Black Mass - The first ever public Satanic ritual on the 40th anniversary of Anton Lavey’s church. Directed by Amit Itelman [12]

The Birthday Boys - Sketch Comedy show directed by Bob Odenkirk which was turned into a series on IFC. [13]

Puppetzilla Puppet Slam Joining together the Los Angeles Guild of Puppetry and Trepany House in occasional editions of Puppetzilla Puppet Slam. "The puppet slam features original works of live puppetry (for adults)."[14][15]

Tomorrow![edit]

Tomorrow! - Midnight Comedy/variety show originally hosted by Craig Anton, Ron Lynch and Brendon Small, then helmed by Ron Lynch. This show helped launch Kate Micucci's career[17] and SNL comedian Melissa Villaseñor.[18]

The final Tomorrow!" at The Steve Allen Theater took place September 30, 2017 with show regulars through the years and special guests such as Emo Philips and Dana Gould.[19]

Tomorrow! began appearing at the Hayworth Theatre in Los Angeles on February 3, 2018[20]

Girly Magazine Party – 1970s late night cable access show à la Playboy After Dark starring a plethora of rotating performers including Jim Turner, Mark Fite, Craig Anton, Music by Andy Paley, and many more.[22]

The Rudy Casoni Variety ShowRat Pack review hosted by Toby Huss. Music by Andy Paley & The Dago 5. Performers include Tom Lennon and Ben Garant, Billy the Mime, The Lampshades http://thelampshades.com/(Kate Flannery and Scot Robinson), Pat Healy, and Mark Fite.[23]

The Kids in the Hall[edit]

Trepany House at The Steve Allen Theater was the Los Angeles home for The Kids in the Hall Canadian sketch comedy group.[24][25] Multiple performances include their Reunion,[26] Reading of Pilot Episode,[24] Premier of Death comes to Town 6, Premiere of Grand Guignol short, the Final Kiss starring Dave Foley and Scott Thompson and Directed by Amit Itelman.[24] Solo shows by Bruce McCulloch,[27] Kevin Mcdonald and Scott Thompson.[28] The Tribute, a musical directed by Dave Foley.

Janet Klein - Naughty, lovely and obscure musical gems. Film historian Jerry Beck presents rare vintage 16mm short films to open the show.[30]
John Ennis presents “The Country Western Show” A night of comedy and music hosted by John Ennis and The Richie West Band, with a revolving cast of special guest performers.[31] Video

With Bob And David - "When Netflix green lit a new batch of Mr. Show episodes, Bob Odenkirk called Itelman to book the Trepany for a free show, 'With Bob And David', to hone new material. The performances were sold out before the email blast went out."[37]

The Firesign Theatre’s "Surprise!" 50th Birthday featuring founding members David Ossman and Philip Proctor[38]

Martin Starr hosts an adult-themed talk show with Silicon Valley creator Mike Judge, comedian and fellow actor Paul Scheer and other guests.[39]

Live reading of George Orwell's 1984 - "Trepany House hosts a staged reading of the entire novel by an eclectic lineup of actors and musicians, including Kate Micucci, Brendon Small, Ron Lynch, Hunter Jackson, John Ennis, Dana Snyder and Olivia Olson. Proceeds benefit Standing With Standing Rock, which opposes the construction of the Dakota Access Pipeline." From April 2017[40]

FleischerFest- A full day of Fleischer cartoon’s, Fleischer themed performance, and a costume contest. Animation historian Jerry Beck interviewed Mark Fleischer (Grandson of Max Fleischer), Janet Klein led a sing a long, and Puddles Pity Party performed.[41][42][43]

2 Headed Dog - a four-man comedy troupe based in Los Angeles, composed of comedians Jim Turner, Mark Fite, Craig Anton, and Dave Allen.[44]

Force Majeure - Eddie Izzard’s one man show, 11 show run. The tour went on to perform in 45 countries and all 50 U.S. States. Comedian Eddie Izzard gave several intimate performances in December 2012 before his Force Majuere shows in Europe in 2013 (and eventually, the Hollywood Bowl)[45][46].
“It’s good for developing new material. Its probably a good idea not to go in front of a ten thousand-seater audience, which you could do but it seems like wasting audience members ...because I am developing new material right now.”[47][48][49]


Venue Closure[edit]

In March 2017, the Center for Inquiry board announced it accepted an offer to sell the theater and surrounding property. The new owner announced its plan to demolish the current structures on the site and construct a housing complex.[50] The last performance was a gala on November 3 called The Last Night of the Steve Allen Theater that featured Ron Lynch, Janet Klein, 2 Headed Dog, Bruce McCulloch, Kimmy Robertson, Jeffrey Combs, Max Maven, Crissy Guererro, Brendon Small, Jerry Minor, Kristian Hoffman, Jesse Merlin and other artists who've been regulars at the theater.[51][52]

Trepany House has not secured a new location. [53]
