Croveo is a frazione of the comune (municipality) of Baceno in the province of Verbano-Cusio-Ossola, in the Italian region Piedmont. In a beeline, Croveo is located 1.8 kilometres (1.1 mi) from Baceno, 40 kilometres (25 mi) from Verbania, and 113 kilometres (70 mi) from Turin, the capital city of Piedmont.

Despite being a hamlet, Croveo is widely known for its natural landscapes, such as its falesia (a cliff that can be used for rock climbing) and its many walking trails. In addition, Croveo is also notorious for its history linked to witches, which earned the hamlet the unofficial name of Paese delle Streghe (Town of the Witches in Italian) and Striogn at Cròf (Wizards of Croveo in Walser dialect). ^[3]

Culture[edit]

Studies on the witchcraft trials in Ossola, dating back to the 15th and 16th centuries, were extensively conducted by priest Tullio Bertamini. He began his investigation due to the discovery of a copy of one of the trials conducted by the inquisition in Novara in 1591, involving a woman from Montecrestese accused of witchcraft for supposedly bewitching a cow. This trial was later published by Bertamini in the magazine Illustrazione Ossolana^[4].^[3]
