Manoel Jardim Gomes, known as Manoel Gomes (born December 2, 1969), is a brazilian brega singer. He is known for creating the song "Caneta Azul" (lit.'Blue Pen'), that became a viral Internet meme in Brazil.

Biography[edit]

Manoel Gomes was born in Balsas and since childhood he was interested in music. The singer confirmed that he write songs since he was 15 years old. He attended middle school and until 2019 he worked as watchman.[1]

Carrer[edit]

The singer gained notoriety in the second half of 2019 from the song "Caneta azul". He wrote the song based on his experience of losing a pen in school. The song became a hit and was covered by many other artists like Wesley Safadão and Simone Mendes. Manoel copyrighted the song right after the success.[1]

After the immediate success, Gomes started to travel around Brazil and performing in different states. At the time, the singer claimed that he wanted to record his first album, with only copyrighted music.[2] However in 2020 the sudden fame coincided with the COVID-19 pandemic in Brazil. But even in that case he was able to succeed with his live promotion. In one of them he was able to attract more than 1.5 million views. Nonetheless Manoel Gomes faced problems with monetization and was scammed by his former manager.[3]

In August 2020, Manoel Gomes released Caneta Azul, his debut album. The project counted with musical production and arrangements by percussionist Laércio da Costa. Besides the title track, composed in two versions - bachata and axé - the album brought songs like "Maura", "Ela É Muito É Vagabunda", and "Parabéns".[4] Além da faixa-título, produzida em duas versões – bachata e axé –,[5] "Eu Vou Deixar de Ser Besta", from the same album, was released as a music video and reached 100.000 views in less than a week. [6]

In 2023, he released the single "Lá Ele" alongside singer-songwriter Tierry.[7]

Politics[edit]

With the Caneta azul project, Manoel Gomes managed to revive his popularity in 2022, especially on social media such as TikTok and Instagram. In the same year, he ran for state deputy for Maranhão for the Liberal Party. The musician recieved 7.000 votes and did not win the election, but he did get a substitute seat. [8] O músico recebeu 7 mil votos e não venceu as eleições, mas conseguiu uma vaga de suplente.[9]
