Daniel's World (Czech: Danielův svět) is a Czech documentary film directed by Veronika Lišková. The film portrays 25 years old pedophile Daniel, a literature student and writer.[1][2] The documentary is made in an observational style[3] with frequent use of voice-overs in which Daniel express his thoughts.[4]
The idea for the film came from its producer Zdeněk Holý who says he got the idea when watching TV presenting a stereotypical image of a pedophilic sex offender. He says he asked himself whether there is a pedophile who have never abused a child.
Synopsis
[edit]Film frequently shows Daniel in everyday situations with voice-overs in which Daniel reflects his thoughts and feelings. In voice-overs throughout the film Daniel describes his relation to Míša, a young boy who he loves. The film shows Daniel's work as a writer showing his fairy-tale being recorded for a radio and a scene of his theater play. Daniel meets twice with a group of pedophiles with whom he discuss their relations to children. Repeatedly in the film Daniel's discuss (with a sexologist, his brother, his friends) his fate of not having a partner, family. In the final part of the film Daniel goes to Prague Pride Parade with 3 other members of community. Before the parade he meets with the Prague Pride director Czeslaw Walek to tell him about his intention and asks him whether pedophiles are welcomed on the parade. In the end scene Daniel express his wish that in future society will accept that pedophile can be a friend with a child.
Production and distribution
[edit]The film was funded from two public sources: Czech Television as its coproducer and by Czech State Cinematography Fund. The film was distributed in Czechia by Artcam and also as a part of One World Film Festival. It appeared on foreign film festivals, most notably in Panorama section of 2015 Berlinale. Other notable screenings were at Croatian ZagrebDox and Polish Docs Against Gravity. Czech Television announced a plan to broadcast the film on channel ČT2 in autumn 2015.[5]
Reception
[edit]The critics appreciated the unusual topic and bravery of the film protagonist. Frequently the film was characterized as difficult to watch because its topic. Critics were divided in their views of the film protagonist. Some characterized him as theatrical[6] and crizicized his self-pity. Others applauded his ability to extress his thoughts and feelings The film was criticized for lack of tempo.[7] Critics applauded the film for sensitivity how it deals with its topic Kamil Fila called the film "one of the saddest films one could see in recent years" and responded to reactions to the film claiming "Suddenly we want even more humane pedophile, a pedophile who is nearly not a pedophile anymore."[8]
The film won an Audience Award at Jihlava International Documentary Film Festival[2] and an Award of Student Jury for the Best Documentary at Finále Plzeň.
