Martin Murtfeld[edit]

Martin Murtfeld(* January 12, 1935, in Frankfurt/Main) is a Germanbanker and sponsor of international cultural interchange

1.Career[edit]

Studied economics, banking, public finance and statistics at Goethe-University Frankfurt/Main, master and doctoral degrees. Postgraduate studies at Institut des Sciences Politiques, Paris.

1961 Credit institution for reconstruction (Reconstruction Loan Corporation) Frankfurt/Main, development finance and balance of payment loans for Southern Europe, South East Asia, and Latin America. Technical assistance for the establishment of promotional banks, e.g. Singapore. Member of government delegations and of the Interministerial Committee for Capital Aid, Bonn.

1971 Deutsche Bank Head Office Frankfurt/Main. Member of the Executive Committee for the International Commercial Banking with group business responsibility for the Near East, Africa, and Latin America, lateron risk management, financial institutions and country risks world-wide. 1982 member of the International Advisory Group for  the foreign debt of Mexico, followed by Brazil. Chaired 1991/2 the „London Club“ for Bulgaria.  Served in committees at the United Nations, the Institute of International Finance Inc. (IIF) Washington D.C., the International Chamber of Commerce Paris and as an expert for the Interministerial Committee for Direct Investment Guarantees, Bonn. Member of the boards of directors of the London-based joint venture banks for Brazil, Mexico, and Saudi-Arabia, as well as Fondo México, a fund for shares.

After having been named as the candidate of the Federal Government of Germany, Murtfeld was elected First Vice Governor of Council of Europe Development Bank, Paris, starting 1995. The mandate was directed towards the reorganization of the asset and liability businesses, treasury, risk management, and audit in order to ensure sustainability and a reputation of excellence for the institution within the International Financial Community and with the Rating Agencies (Triple AAA).

Since 2002 advisory work upon initiatives of International Institutions on corporate governance (China), and systemic issues of real estate finance (Serbia, Ukraine). Lecturer at Institute for Banking and Finance of free Universität Berlin for „Rating“ (Winter Semester 2002/3) and „Banking Aspects of International Financial Institutions“ (Winter Semester 2004/5). Occasional lectures on financial markets, real estate finance, and European integration.

4. Cultural Involvement[edit]

Martin Murtfeld defends the image of the universal banker who considers general well-being and culture in his activities. Together with his spouse Margarethe, an art collector and former gallerist, he had a focus on painters and musicians from Brazil, Central and Eastern Europe and as of late from France.
