María Cecilia Botero Cadavid (born May 13, 1955) is a Colombian actress, presenter and journalist. She is best known in English-speaking countries as the speaking voice of Abuela Alma Madrigal in Disney's 2021 film Encanto.
Early life[edit]
María Cecilia Botero Cadavid was born in Medellín, Colombia on May 13, 1955. Her father was Jaime Botero Gómez, a school teacher. Her siblings, Óscar and Ana Cristina are also actors. Her maternal aunt is the actress and singer Dora Cadavid.
Botero studied anthropology at university.
Career[edit]
Botero's first television role was a production of The Canterville Ghost in 1971. In the same year, she starred in her first film, María, directed by Tito Davison and co-starring Fernando Allende.
Personal life[edit]
In 1982, Botero married Argentine writer and director David Stivel. They have a son, actor and director Mateo Stivelberg. Botero is also stepmother to Stivel's two children from previous relationships, Alejo and Andrea. Botero was widowed when Stivel was diagnosed with cancer, and died in 1992 at the age of 61.
