Influences[edit]

two sets of influences worked on him which helped to shape the perspective that he had adopted on the nation and nationalism in India. The first set related to his involvement with radical groups among student movements in Baroda as an undergraduate student and later with other leftist and Marxist groups participating in the nationalist movements. The second set was due to the influence of his father Ramanlal Desai - a civil servant, novelist, and committed nationalist The first set of influences was instrumental in training Desai to theorize the issues of nation and class and committed him to a revolutionary intervention in society and to using historical materialist methods to examine nationalism while the influence of the second set was significant in leading him ti its reiteration nationalism as the only ideology that could confront colonialism. In his book Social background of Indian nationalism Desai combined both the perspectives.[8]

view on social movements[edit]

He considered that the emerging contradictions in the Indian Process of Social Transformation arise from the growing nexus of capitalist bourgeoisie , rural petty bourgeoisie and a state apperatus ,all drawn from similar social roots ,which thwarts the aspirations of rural and industrial working classes by its sheer power and skillful stratagems. The contradiction if not resolved re-emerges in the form of protests and social movements. The social unrest is rooted in the capitalist path of development followed by India , bequeathed to it as a legacy of the national movement. [14][15]
