Lauren Keyana "Keke" Palmer (born August 26, 1993) is an American actress and singer who rose to fame for her performance in the 2006 film Akeelah and the Bee.[1] She currently stars as the title character in the Nickelodeon sitcom True Jackson, VP.

Introduction[edit]

As an actress, Keke Palmer has already established herself as one of the fastest rising young stars of her generation. Her talents span film, television, and music alike. Palmer was the title character in the Lions Gate Films/Starbucks Entertainment sleeper hit Akeelah and the Bee, opposite actors Laurence Fishburne and Angela Bassett.[1] In the movie, Palmer plays Akeelah Anderson, an 11-year-old girl who participates in the Scripps National Spelling Bee. Her breakthrough performance has received praise from many film critics and organizations. Among the list of nominations received, Akeelah and the Bee was listed on of NBR's 2006 Top Independent Films of the Year as well as four nominations from the NAACP Image Awards. Palmer alone won an NAACP Image Award for Outstanding Lead Actress in a Motion Picture as well as Outstanding Lead Actress in a Motion Picture by the Black Movie Awards. She has also received nominations for Most Promising Newcomer by the Chicago Film Critics, Best Actress by the Black Reel Awards, and Best Young Actress by the Broadcast Film Critics Association.[2]

Film, Television & Music Career[edit]

On the small screen Palmer starred in the Disney Channel Original Movie Jump In! in January of 2007. The premiere broke the network records for an original television movie premiere with 8.2 million viewers and stood as basic cable's most-watched program for the entire day. [3] Palmer is also featured on the movie's soundtrack and is the only artist with two songs on the album. The soundtrack landed at the top of the charts as the third bestselling album in its first week of release and remained in the top 10 for over a month.[4] In 2007, Palmer's debut pop/R&B album So Uncool dropped for Atlantic Records. In support of the release, she embarked on a twelve city tour with the WNBA where she performed songs from her debut album So Uncool as the half-time special entertainment [5]as well as headlining Disney's 2007 Jingle Jam Tour.[6] Palmer also signed a music publishing deal with Cherry Lane Music Publishing Company, Inc. in 2007 as well as signing on to headline Sanrio Inc.'s official Hello Kitty CD with the track "Come on, Come on" released in late 2008.[7]

She also starred opposite Sam Jackson and Eva Mendes in Cleaner. The film premiered at the 2007 Toronto International Film Festival to strong reviews.[8] In 2008, Palmer received rave reviews for her performance in The Longshots, a true story about the first female to quarterback an all-boys football team to Pop Warner Nationals.[9] Palmer began her career with a small role in the feature film Barbershop 2: Back in Business at the age of nine, opposite Queen Latifah. That role led to a series of guest-starring roles on television shows like Strong Medicine, Cold Case, ER, and Law & Order.[10] She later went on to star in the Emmy-nominated made-for-TV movie The Wool Cap, opposite William H. Macy. Her performance in The Wool Cap earned her a NAACP Image Award as well as a coveted Screen Actors Guild nomination in the Outstanding Performance by a Female Actor in Television Movie or Miniseries category, alongside Charlize Theron, Hilary Swank, Glen Close, and Patricia Heaton. This nomination put Palmer in the record books as the youngest actor to ever be nominated by the Guild in a Lead Actor category.[11] Her other film and TV credits include co-starring in the made for television movie Knights of the South Bronx with Ted Danson, a pilot for her own show on Disney Channel called Keke & Jamal, and the Lionsgate film Madea's Family Reunion starring Tyler Perry, Cicely Tyson, and Dr. Maya Angelou.

Palmer can be seen as the star of her very own hit television show, True Jackson V.P. on the Nickelodeon Network. The show is about a 15-year-old girl named True Jackson (Palmer) who becomes a vice president at a billion dollar fashion company. When it debuted in November 2008, over 5 million tuned in to watch making it the largest debut in Nickelodeon's 29 year history.[12] Recently, Palmer was honored with a NAACP Image Award as 'Best Actress is a Children's Program' for her role as True Jackson.[13] Palmer can also be seen on the big screen playing opposite Kevin Spacey and Robin Williams in the feature film Shrink which was a crowd pleaser at Sundance.[14]

Palmer's career thus far is best summarized by legendary movie critic Roger Ebert who said, "Remember her name."[15]

Charity Work[edit]

Palmer is involved in several charities that help children. In 2007, she was a part of a special initiative funded by the Boys & Girls Clubs of America called It's Cool To Be Smart. Palmer traveled all of the country performing free concerts and telling children that they should aspire to be smart, using the line from Akeelah and the Bee "Who are you not to be beautiful and talented, let your light shine so that others may shine", she motivated the children in the program to succeed through education.[16]

In that same year the director of Akeelah and the Bee, Doug Atchison, asked her to be a part of his charity event to help raise funds for a youth center in South Central Los Angeles called A Place Called Home. It was an annual bowling fundraiser , Stars & Strikes, that Palmer continues to attend to this day.[17] In 2010, Palmer became a spokesperson for General Mills helping to promote their, I Heart Breakfast Campaign. The goal is to encourage young children to eat a healthy breakfast, research proves that when children eat breakfast regularly they have more energy to perform well in school. Palmer shot a PSA especially encouraging young teen girls to eat breakfast because that will help them to maintain a healthy body weight and keep cholesterol low.[18]

Producer[edit]

Palmer has stepped into a new role as producer, this year she produced her first music video for her song "The One You Call", according to Palmer , "the song was leaked and instead of just letting it go to waste I decided to take matters into my own hands and shoot a video".[19] Palmer will also be producing her first movie in 2011, RAGZ along with TeenNick President Nick Cannon.[10]

Fashion Career[edit]

In July 2009, Palmer launched a Wal-Mart fashion line inspired by her Nickelodeon show, True Jackson, VP. The fashion line consists of jumpers, modern dresses, knit tops, T-shirts, leggings, jeans and more for under $14.[20]

Upcoming Projects[edit]

Palmer is set to return to the big screen in 2012 with two projects, portraying a gospel singer in the feature film Joyful Noise starring along side Dolly Parton and Queen Latifah, and as the voice of 'Peaches' in the latest film from the highly successful Ice Age series: "Continental Drift".[10]
