Sparekassen Vendsyssel is a danish savings bank with approx. 700 employees and 43 branches in in North Jutland, Central Jutland and Copenhagen.[1] Sparekassen Vendsyssel is a established as a traditional danish "garantsparekasse" (English: guarantor savings bank) and it is the largest of its type in Denmark - based on primary earnings, guarantor capital and the number of guarantors.

As a "garantsparekasse" the bank is owned by its "guarantors", who are customers, who has chosen to deposit capital as supplement the bank's equity.

Sparekassen can be dated back to 6. february 1871, where "Sparekassen for Vrå og Em sogne" (English: Savings Bank of Vrå and Em Parishes) was established. Later on, the name was changed to "Vrå Sparekasse". In 2001 the bank merged with "Jelstrup Lyngby Sparekasse", creating "Sparekassen Vendsyssel".

Through the years, several other banks have merged into Sparekassen Vendsyssel. Most recently in 2019, where it merged with Dronninglund Sparekasse.

Vagn Hansen[2] has been the CEO of Sparekassen Vendsyssel since 1997. He has succeded in developing the small rural savings bank, into one of the 16 largest banks in Denmark[3] through a combination of mergers and organic growth.

In 2019 Sparekassen Vendsyssel had a turnover of DKK 606 mill. (€ 84.34 mill.) before taxes.[4]

The history in highlights[edit]

1871 "Sparekassen for Vrå og Em Sogne" was established 6. february 1871.
2001 "Vrå Sparekasse" merges with "Jelstrup Lyngby Sparekasse" and changes its name to "Sparekassen Vendsyssel".
2004 A new branch in Skagen is established.
2005 The bank "Hellevad-Ørum Sparekasse", in the town of Klokkerholm, merges into Sparekassen Vendsyssel.
2006 A new branch in Aabybro is established.

The two banks "Brovst Sparekasse" and "Jerslev Sparekasse" merges into Sparekassen Vendsyssel.

2007 A new branch on "Gammel Strand" in Copenhagen is established.
2008 The Frederikshavn branch of "Sparbank" and the bank of "Ulsted Sparekasse" is merged into Sparekassen Vendsyssel.

A new branch in Sindal is established in November.

2009 Sparekassen Vendsyssels gains control of 4 branches of the former "EBH Bank", which had filed for bankrupcy.
2012 The banks of "Sparekassen Limfjorden" and "Sparekassen Hvetbo" merges into Sparekassen Vendsyssel.
2015 The bank of "Hals Sparekasse" merges into Sparekassen Vendsyssel.
2016 Sparekassen Vendsyssel buys 4 branches of "Den Jyske Sparekasse", located in i Lem, Skive, Vinderup and Aalborg.

A new branch on "Rådhuspladsen" (English: City Hall Square) in Copenhagen is established.

2018 Sparekassen Vendsyssel buys all three branches of "Østjydsk Bank", which had filed for bankrupcy, located in Mariager, Hobro and Mariager.

A new branch in Tårs is established.

2019 The bank of "Dronninglund Sparekasse" merges into Sparekassen Vendsyssel on 16. october 2019.[5]
2020 The bank of "Salling Bank" merges into Sparekassen Vendsyssel on 27. october 2020
