Faculty of Education Masaryk University is a school of education located in Brno, Czech republic and was established in 1946 as fifth faculty of Masaryk University.[1]

Courses at the school include undergraduate, masters and doctoral programmes and professional development studies in fields such as teachers education, special pedagogy, social pedagogy and speech therapy.[2] The faculty is also the only one in the Czech Republic to offer studies in applied behavioural therapy.[3]

The faculty is situated on Poříčí street near Mendel Square.

1946-1989[edit]

The school was founded, like its three sisters, at Charles University, Palacký University and Comenius University in 1946. This was part of the post-war changes and it happened at all universities in Czechoslovakia at that time on the basis of one of Beneš's Decrees No. 132/1945 Coll., on teacher education of 27 October 1945.[4] The composition of the study of pedagogy, the length of study and other requirements were regulated by a government decree at that time.[5] Preparations for the establishment of the new faculty took place at Masaryk University from the autumn of 1945 until the summer of 1946.

On 21 October 1946 the first meeting of the teaching staff took place, at which the first dean of the faculty elected the well-known Czech linguist František Trávníček. This meeting marked the beginning of the new faculty of Masaryk University. The teaching itself was then ceremonially opened on 10 November 1946.[6]

After 1990[edit]

Stanislava Kučerová became the first post-Soviet dean, who at that time had been forced to work outside the faculty for 20 years and who was elected on 10 January 1990, although she originally ran for the position of vice-dean. The election was attended by 25 student representatives and 25 academic staff representatives.[7]

The first years after 1990 saw the return of some previously uncomfortable staff members and the closure of some faculty departments associated with the communist regime (the Department of National Defence Education, the Personel Check Up Department and the Cabinet of Marxism-Leninism).

A new academic senate was elected at the end of May 1990 and Josef Janás was elected dean. The faculty gradually adjusted its teaching in accordance with the new Higher Education Act and in 1994-1995 it was accredited by a government commission in which it was rated as the best of nine pedagogical faculties in the Czech Republic.[8]

A significant change in the operation of the faculty was the opening of a new building at Poříčí 9 in 1995, which filled the void left by a houses destroyed during World War II.[9] In 2005, the largest solar power plant in the Czech Republic at that time was installed on the roof of the Poříčí 31 faculty building.[10] Another significant construction modification was the opening of the CVIDOS building at Poříčí 31a in September 2014.[11]

The Faculty of Education of Masaryk University has been a member of the European Teacher Education Network since September 2017.[12] The dean of the faculty is also automatically a member of the Association of Deans of Faculties of Education.

Research[edit]

Faculty of Education covers various areas of research (Teaching and Pedagogy, Educational Policy and Evaluation, Art and Literature, History, areas of language, Mathematics, Natural Sciences, Social Sciences, Art and Technology Education,[13] Disability and Art Creation,[14] Gifted children[15] etc.). The faculty is also active in the area of research for novice teachers.[16]

In the field of applied behavioural therapy the faculty collaborates with Queen's University Belfast.[17] In 2021 the faculty received the HR Excellence in Research award.[18]

Logo and colour[edit]

The original logo of the faculty was an open book symbolizing education and educational resources. The colour of the faculty is orange (Pantone 1375 C).

As of 2018, the entire Masaryk University has switched to the Unified Visual Style, which consists of the three basic elements of brand, font and colour.[21] The Faculty of Education uses the MUNI PED as the brand, the MUNI font in the Light, Regular, Medium and Bold cuts, which was developed specifically for the needs of the university, is used for the font, and the Faculty of Education uses the orange PANTONE1505 C/U as the colour.

The insignia consists of a medal of the dean's chain designed by Václav Adolf Kovanič. The obverse depicts the profile and chest of Jan Amos Komenský, the reverse depicts hands passing the torch.

Eduard Milén also made a scepter in the spirit of the burning torch. The insignia dates from 1965. The motto of the faculty is the Latin expression "Traditio Lampadis" (passing of the torch).
