Shift in political views
[edit]Kasparian’s political views began to shift somewhat beginning in 2022, later describing herself as becoming more centrist or being “on the left”, but not a “leftist”. In October 2022, she revealed that she had experienced sexual assault by a homeless man in a Los Angeles park and had experienced backlash for reporting it, with accusations of bigotry against homeless persons and racism, even though she had not specified the race of the perpetrator, who she later specified was white. In November 2022, Kasparian wrote an op-ed for Newsweek stating that Democratic Party politicians and liberal opinion makers were engaging in denialism about the early 2020s crime spike, that crime was having a disproportionate impact on the working class and marginalized people that liberals claim to represent, and that needed criminal justice reform must be balanced against the need for public safety.
In an April 2023 tweet, she stated that she found some trans-inclusive language that referred to women using terms like “birthing persons” to be dehumanizing. Some commentators referred to such concerns as exaggerated and transphobic, in some cases calling Kasparian a “TERF”. On a Young Turks episode several months later, she stated that she was “done with identitarian garbage”, which in her opinion was having a negative impact on the political left by sidelining economic concerns and alienating mainstream voters.
She has since stated that her prior uncritical support of a kind of party line left-wing politics led to misreporting of a number of news stories that she had work on for The Young Turks, and has since issued on-air corrections concerning stories related to Rebekah Jones and Keffals, sources who she now sees as having made fraudulent claims.
Kasparian has stated that her recent intellectual evolution was greatly influenced by the podcast Blocked and Reported and Jonathan Haidt’s book The Righteous Mind.
