From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

In 2010, the City of Syracuse officially recognized 26 neighborhoods within its boundaries.

The city is roughly divided into four quadrants by Interstate 81 which runs north–south through the city and Interstate 690 which runs east–west. These quadrants are sometimes referred to as the north, east, south, and west sides.

The Downtown area is usually referred to as such.

East[edit]

The Eastside is home to 160-acre Oakwood Cemetery, University Hill, and 76-acre Thornden Park. On "the hill" are Syracuse University and the Carrier Dome, SUNY-ESF, the nearby Marshall Street business district, and three hospitals. University-area residential areas include the city-designated University Neighborhood, Westcott, and Berkeley Park.

North of East Genesee Street (State Route 92) is the Near Eastside and a commercial–industrial district surrounding Erie Boulevard East (State Route 5), the old path of the Erie Canal. Further north of Salt Springs Road and further east is the residential Salt Springs neighborhood which abuts Le Moyne College and DeWitt, across the city border.

South of Salt Springs Road, Scottholm straddles East Genesee Street. To the east, where Meadowbrook Drive intersects East Genesee Street is Nottingham High School, the city's oldest. The residential neighborhood surrounding Meadowbrook Drive continues southwest along city limits, incorporating the affluent Bradford Hills before Meadowbrook Drive crosses Westcott Street and ends at Colvin Street.

South of Colvin Street lies city-designated South Campus which is primarily Syracuse University-operated housing, and is adjacent to the Jamesville quarry and county incinerator in the Town of Onondaga. West of Comstock Avenue and south of Oakwood Cemetery is residential–commercial–light industrial Outer Comstock, also bordered by the Town of Onondaga and Route 81.
