Aum Dorji Choden[edit]

Aum Dorji Choden born in 1960 is the iconic woman figure in Bhutan known for her integrity and high morals, she served the country in various position pioneering in many field.[1] Starting from 2013 she is the Minister of Works and Human Settlement ministry of Bhutan.[2][3]

Education[edit]

She had her primary and secondary schooling in Bhutan and she has Bachelor degree in Civil Engineering from Birla Institute of Technology, Ranchi, Jharkhand, India. She has MA in Public Administration from Syracuse University in the United States of America (USA).[4]

Civil Servant Career[edit]

Dorji Choden started her career as an Assistant Engineer in Public works Department, with this title she became the first woman engineer in the history of Bhutan. She also served as chief of Public Health Engineering Division of Bhutan. In January 2000 she became the Director of the Standard and Quality Control Authority of Bhutan. Owing to her dedication and hard work in January 2006 she was appointed as Commissioner of Anti-Corruption Commission (ACC) of Bhutan. Which is an autonomous body in Bhutan, this was also established in the same year. During her tenure in Civil Servant she represented technical and gender issue at the national, regional and international forums. In 2008 when Bhutan marked a big shift in government form, it shifted from Monarchy to Constitutional Monarchy. In that event to participate in the first ever Parliamentary Election of Bhutan, she resigned from ACC in 2008. However she had to face a defeat in 2008 election the she worked as assistant resident representative of UN,poverty and MDG unit from 2009. While working in UN she handled the poverty portfolio, addressing youth employment and women's empowerment till 2012.[5][6]

Political Life[edit]

In 2008 she resigned from ACC to join People's Democratic Party (PDP), the first registered political party in Bhutan and contested from Thrimshing constituency in Trashigang. She faced a thrashing defeat in 2008 election which brought a pause in her political life then she worked with UN[7] . In 2012 she resigned from UN and joined a newly formed political party Druk Nyamrup Tshogpa (DNT), She became the president of DNT. This made her the first two women president of political party[8] . With Lily Wangchuk as president of Druk Chirwang Tshogpa (DCT), In the primary election of Bhutan 31 May 2013 she got overwhelming victory in the election but her party DNT faced defeat which was another obstacle. Only PDP andDPT the two parties made their way to General Election.[9]. Therefore she once again joined PDP in their invitation. However she had to face lots of criticism for that. Constitution Bhutan does not allow coalition form of government. Hence she was accused of forming coalition with PDP. As Dorji Choden was president of DNT so many people felt that leaving own party and joining the winning party as hungry of power. Despite the criticism she joined the PDP and also won the general election held on 13 July 2013. The party elected her to the post of cabinet member and hence became the first woman minister in Bhutan. She heads the ministry of Works and Human Settlement. Again she came in controversy for her statement in media about the gender discrimination in Bhutan[10] . even a critic website published an article criticizing her statement given to media[11] . Along with the portfolio of Minister she is also the Chairman of NCWCof Bhutan and also the chairman of Bhutan Education City.[12]
