Conception

[edit]

While at the world premiere for Captain Marvel, Marvel Studios' President Kevin Feige was asked by an interviewer how the film would handle its upcoming DC Extended Universe competitor Shazam!, which is being marketed as #TheOriginalCaptainMarvel by its director David F. Sandberg, due to it's titular character having formerly held up the Captain Marvel name until Marvel Comics trademarked it with the creation of their own character. Kevin Feige responded by calling it a "friendly competition between Marvel and DC" and that it doesn't matter which version of Captain Marvel fans and audiences want to see. Feige than moved on by stating that to coincide with the release of Captain Marvel, Marvel Comics was to publish Neil Gaiman and Mark Buckingham's first three issues of their new series Miracleman by Gaiman & Buckingham: The Silver Age, in which Miracleman was originally conceived as a Shazam knockoff. Feige went on stating that he and other executives at Marvel Studios had been in discussions with Gaiman on developing a potential project based on Miracleman, later clarifying that it would be set in the Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU).

Development

[edit]

Neil Gaiman began development on the series in September 2019 with his partner Mark Buckingham contributing to the writing process later that month. On January 12, 2020 Marvel Studios announced they had greenlit the series and hired duo Josh Bazier and Marshall Johnson to write the screenplay with Gaiman and Buckingham. Robert Rodriguez was hired to add to the screenplay before filming began and became a producer on the series.
