Agamy (from Greek ἀ a, "no" e γάμος gamos, "consort") is a relational model which consists of not forming couples or marriages,[1] and sometimes even reproduction.

In the inaccurate sense, there is agamy where there is no partner, and the person who has not established partner is agamous (agamist or agamic).[2]

In a precise sense, agamy implies the deconstruction of the dynamic system, whose majority expression in Western world is the monogamous pattern, and the loving ideology whose function is the propagation of said system.[3]

Because of this meaning, it is therefore a radical alternative to monogamy and, by extension, to any gamous model (marital, matrimonial, conjugal, connubial, nuptial, hymeneal, bridal or spousal).

History

[edit]

In addition to isolated attempts to use the term with other definitions (Bachofen),[4][5] agamy first appears as an express rejection of gamy on January 1, 2014 on the blog contra el amor (against love).[6][7]

The agamy has eight theoretical pillars that serve, furthermore, as developmental lines of the model:[8]

  1. rejection of love
  2. restoration of reason as the ultimate decision-making authority
  3. reintegration of relationships with ethics
  4. radical rejection of gender
  5. rejection of normative canons of beauty and hierarchies of sociosexual value
  6. rejection of patriarchal sexuality by questioning the concept of "object of desire"
  7. replacing jealousy with “indignation”
  8. replacement of the family by the “free grouping”

Gamy

[edit]

Gamies or the “marriage bond” is the inheritance of the slave patriarchal contracts whereby one or more women become the property of one man (Pateman).[9][10]

Agamies in front of non-monogamous models

[edit]

Agamy has in common with nonmonogamous relational models its questions of relational normativity and hegemonic monogamy (in this sense it is a “nonmonogamy” since it is not monogamy).

At the same time, it is distinguished from them in the radical rejection of fallow gamos and love ideology (it would not be defined in opposition to monogamy, but to all gamous models, monogamous or not).

Agamous people are not necessarily sologamous (or sologamists), since self-marriage is practiced as a celebration of singlism (singleism, being single), conventionally by gamous people. Therefore, sologamics and sologamies/sologamy have no direct or inherent relation to agamics.

Differs from polyamory, hierarchal or not, in no couples establishment. Relationships evolve without the need to settle on either side of gamy, whatever their practices, degrees of intimacy, levels of trust, stability, etc.

It is distinguished from relationship anarchy or free love in the explicit rejection of gamies, which tolerates it, and the loving ideology, which embraces it in the form of criticism of romantic love. Where it is understood that respect for relational diversity should prevail, agamy signals the renewal of a patriarchal and classist relational system that must be clearly rejected.[11]
