Maria Clara at Ibarra (transl. Maria Clara and Ibarra) is a Philippine historical portal fantasy[a] drama series, based on the Jose Rizal novels Noli Me Tángere and El Filibusterismo. Directed by Zig Dulay, it stars Barbie Forteza, Julie Anne San Jose and Dennis Trillo. It premiered on GMA Network on October 3, 2022, and ended on February 24, 2023. The series follows Maria Clara "Klay" Infantes (Forteza), a college student who gets transported into the setting of the novels.
Development of the series began in 2019, where it was conceptualized as an adaptation of the novels, before adding a character from the Generation Z in an effort to add a "modern twist" to the story. Filming began in August 2022 in Ilocos Norte and Ilocos Sur, and ended on April 2023. The series gained acclaim for their plot and performances.
Premise
[edit]Maria Clara "Klay" Infantes is a college student from the Generation Z who was caught by her college professor for plagiarizing a book report on Noli Me Tangere. At the professor's suggestion, she reads the book, which was owned by the professor, only to find out that she was transported to the setting of the novel.
