1994–2010: Early life and career beginnings

[edit]

Julie Anne Peñaflorida San Jose, the eldest of three siblings, was born on May 17, 1994, in Novaliches, Quezon City, to Marivic (née Peñaflorida) and Jonathan San Jose. Her mother is from Marinduque, while his father is from Manila.[1] She started singing at the age of two, and learned to sing Donna Cruz's "Habang May Buhay" on her own.[2] She then competed in Eat Bulaga!'s Little Miss Philippines and Magandang Tanghali Bayan's Munting Miss U, finishing as the finalist on both competitions.[1][3]

In 2005, San Jose, competed on the reality television show Popstar Kids. She recalled about her near-disqualification from the show due to age constraints. She eventually advanced as one of the five grand finalists, losing to Rita Daniela in the final competition.[4] The following year, singer Jaya and composer Danny Tan formed the group Sugarpop, a recurring performer on the variety show SOP. It was composed of the five finalists on Popstar Kids, including San Jose. The group released a studio album, and was disbanded in 2009 due to puberty of the male members.[4] She then performed the soundtrack theme of the fantasy series Dyesebel (2008).[5] San Jose made her acting debut with a supporting role on Gaano Kadalas ang Minsan.[6][7]

2011–2017: Rise to prominence

Following an appearance in the drama series Daldalita (2011),[8] San Jose signed a recording deal with GMA Records,[9] where she released her self-titled studio album.[7] She then co-starred alongside Elmo Magalona in the romantic drama Together Forever.[10] Next, she made her feature film debut in Just One Summer.[11]
