Semantic Atheism

[edit]

Semantic Atheism is the philosophical position that deities do cannot exist. The definition of god simply encompass the supernatural which cannot be natural, regardless of limitations, therefore it is not possible for a god to exist.

The Problem of the Supernatural

[edit]

One problem posed by the question of the existence of a god is that traditional beliefs usually ascribe to God various supernatural powers. Supernatural beings may be able to conceal and reveal themselves for their own purposes, as for example in the tale of Baucis and Philemon. In addition, according to concepts of God, God is not part of the natural order, but the ultimate creator of nature and of the scientific laws.

Semantic Atheism hold the position that anything that exists can be naturalized. Therefore rejects the notion of anything that cannot operate within the natural order, and therefore reject the absolute supernatural.

Massively Powerful Beings

[edit]

Semantic Atheism does not argue or disapprove the possible existence of Massively Powerful Beings. Massively Powerful beings are defined as beings of great power in existence whether technological or biological. The belief is if there is the possible existence of such a being of great power, able to make changes or acts beyond our current understanding, it can still be naturalized and therefore they are not supernatural and by that definition, they are not a deity.

Role of Religion

[edit]

Religion is viewed as an ideology based around the concept of there being a god. Semantic Atheists view this as god existing in this way as an idea, not an actuality in the true nature. Therefore, religion is simply seen as an idea of deities created from people in creating a code of rule and expalaining the existence of the unknown.
