Zoom Video Communications (known simply as “Zoom”) is a company dealing in cloud-based video communication specializing in markets of professionals, business, educational, and healthcare institutions. Offering both cloud meeting and webinar software, Zoom is most known for Zoom Cloud Meetings, also referred to as "Zoom" by users, which combines video conferencing, online meetings, and mobile collaboration into one platform.[2]

Zoom was founded in 2011 by engineers from the development teams of Cisco and its collaboration business unit, WebEx. Zoom Cloud Meetings, was developed with the intention of becoming a customer-centric communications solution available on any of the current platforms, including Windows,Mac OS, iOS, Android, and H.323 and SIP room systems.[2]

The official launch of Zoom was in February 2013 and, as of May 2013, it had reached 1 million users.[3] In June 2014, Zoom's user base has grown to 10 million.[4]

  • Zoom Cloud Room Connector (CRC) - Allows users to connect their H.323/SIP room systems to the cloud to communicate with desktop, tablet and mobile devices running Zoom software[6]

Video Conferencing on Zoom[edit]

Initially, Zoom featured the ability to host conferences with up to 15 participants.[8] On January 25, 2013, however, the formula changed to allows up to 25 participants for all meetings. Version 2.5 of the software further extended the offering allowing up to 100 participants in one conference.[9]

The Zoom software relies on client-side encryption using the Advanced Encryption Standard 128-bit (AES 128) algorithm for presentation content.[10]

Partnerships & “Works With Zoom” Program[edit]

Zoom has a variety of notable partnerships:

  • The Works With Zoom program identifies hardware and software tools, such as speakerphones and cameras, for compatibility with Zoom’s Cloud Meetings solution to provide a complete meeting experience. Among these partners are Logitech for Business, Vaddio, InFocus, and AVer.[17]
  • Zoom also has agreements with several notable single sign-on (SSO) providers whereby the SSO providers integrate Zoom, allowing users to reach the Zoom app through the SSO platform. Notable SSO partners include: Centrify, Okta, Ping Identity, and OneLogin.
  • InterviewStream[18] - Integration of Zoom Cloud Meetings into their platform, allowing users to host HD video interviews with up to 25 participants.
  • RingCentral Meetings — is a multi-point HD video conferencing and screen sharing technology built for smartphones, tablets and computers powered by Zoom through a licensing agreement.[13]
