Early life and family

[edit]

Vedagiri Rambabu was born on 14th October 1952, in Tsundur, Tenali Taluka, Guntur District of Andhra Pradesh. His parents were Smt Bhargavi and Shri PoornaChandraRao. His father was a Circle Inspector in Excise Department. Due to the nature of his fathers job, the family had to move several cities/towns in the then united state of Andhra Pradesh. Rambabu developed an aptitude in literature, theater and cinema from his schooling days. His father did not approve of Rambabu’s interest in theatre and cinema as he thought they would not provide steady income. As a literarian, he was inspired by the works of YerramSetty Sai. He held popular writers Adivishnu and Vihari in high esteem and considered them as his Gurus. During his undergraduate days in 1974 Rambabu submitted his first story ‘Samudram’ and won the competition held on the eve of Deepawali, by the then famous Andhra Patrika. This provided him the much needed encouragment and he took to writing many stories for various other popular magazines like Yuva, Jyoti, and Swati. He worked as an announcer in the All India Radio for some time. The popularity of his short stories surged during this stint in AIR. As a freelancer, he wrote several essays for various newspapers. He worked as a senior journalist for the weekly Andhra Bhoomi and editor for the weekly Pallavi. He kept his original interest in writing stories and essays glowing in whatever job he did. Meanwhile, Television gained popularity. He strived to make Visual Media a social instrument that could bring a change in society. That lead him to make a popular TV Serial ‘Papam Pasivadu’ for Doordarshan. This is one mega show that ran for 52 weeks. He was adjudged best director and producer for this telefilm and won a Golden Nandi award for the year 2002. Krishna Mohan who rendered his voice for the title song of this telefilm won Nandi award as well. This was followed by another popular TV Serial ‘Adavi Manishi’, for which Rambabu won a Silver Nandi. He collaborated with the likes of Sailaja Suman and Ramani Sanyal in several in house serials. With a permission from prison officials, he studied prisons all over the state and also researched into the lives of the prisoners. This resulted in the making of a popular serial ‘Jail Godala Madhya’, based on the true stories. It was published over 60 weeks in the popular weekly magazine Swati. It was published as a book and was translated into several Indian languages. His work in literature for children is specially remembered. He was the first editor for "Indradhanussu", the first video magazine for children. Besides life and endeavor as an author, he wore many other hats, arguably most significant of which is his criticism of those who looked down on Telugu short-stories. He advocated for national recognition of Telugu Story-writing. He is remembered for his kind heart and generosity as he helped people, who approached him, get inexpensive treatment, as he worked as the Media-Incharge of Global Hospitals.
