Kimberley[edit]

The Kimberley region, in the far north of the state, is hot year-round, with distinct wet and dry seasons. Rainfall ranges from about 500 millimetres (20 in) per year on the region's southern boundary to 1,200 millimetres (47 in) in Kalumburu in the far north, with an average of 1,000 millimetres (39 in) across the entire region. 94% of rainfall falls during the wet season.[2]

The dry season runs from April or May to September. It is marked by clear skies, low humidity and almost no rain. Maximum temperatures generally average between 27 °C (81 °F) to 37 °C (99 °F), and minimum temperatures between 10 °C (50 °F) and 20 °C (68 °F).[3][4]

From October to December is the "build up" to the wet season, in which humidity and temperature are at their greatest, but the only rain is delivered by small and intense thunderstorms during the evening. The monsoon usually arrives by the end of December, signifying the start of the wet season. Large low pressure systems and tropical cyclones bring significant rainfall, causing flooding in the region and blocking off roads. This lasts until partway through April, with the peak being January and February.[3][4]

Wyndham Airport has the record for the highest average maximum and minimum temperatures in Australia, with an average maximum of 36.1 °C (97.0 °F) and an average minimum of 22.3 °C (72.1 °F).[5]
