Stephen Gaynor School (“Gaynor”) is one of the first specialized schools in the U.S. for language-based learning differences, located on the Upper West Side of Manhattan (148 West 90th Street), in New York City, New York. Gaynor was founded in 1962 by Yvette Siegel-Herzog and Dr. Miriam Michael, graduates of New York University. Though the field of Special Education was in its infancy at the time, the friends saw the need to establish a school for bright students with learning differences. Through Gaynor, they pioneered the individualized, multi-sensory teaching approach used today.
History
[edit]Stephen Gaynor School was founded in 1962. It was originally located in a two-room Upper East Side apartment with the first class having only 5 students.
In 2010, Gaynor expanded its facilities with the purchase of the historic Claremont Riding Academy, originally Claremont Stables located at 175 West 89th Street. The building is listed on the National Register of Historic Places and until its final year of operation in 2007, the Claremont served as the oldest continuously running equestrian stable in New York City, having opened in 1892.
Claremont Stables and Carriage House located at 175 West 89th Street. Today, the school enrolls approximately 385 students and operates across a two-building campus totaling nearly 80,000 square feet.
Current tuition for the 2017–2018 academic year is listed on its website at $63,400.
Accreditation
[edit]Stephen Gaynor School is a fully independent, non-sectarian school governed by a board of trustees. The school is accredited by the New York State Association of Independent Schools, and is an Organizational Member of the Academy of Orton-Gillingham Practitioners and Educators, and Member of the Academy’s Council of Accredited Programs. Gaynor’s program meets the International Dyslexia Association’s Knowledge and Practice Standard.
Curriculum
[edit]Gaynor specializes in individualized curriculum, tailored to each student's learning needs. Reading curriculum is based on the Orton-Gillingham approach, and math curriculum is developed using Singapore Math and Stern Structural Arithmetic.
Campus
[edit]Stephen Gaynor School is currently located in two buildings connected by a fourth story sky bridge. The North Building entrance is located on West 90th Street between Amsterdam Avenue and Columbus Avenue, and the South Building entrance is located on West 89th Street.
In 2010, Gaynor purchased the historic Claremont Riding Stables which added an additional 65,000 square feet of space. In 2012, Gaynor's Early Childhood Center opened, serving children ages three to six and specializing in early intervention. The EC has state-of-the-art classrooms with SMART boards, a child-friendly full kitchen, book nook, on-site sensory gym, and an outdoor garden. In summer 2017, ground was broken on a performing arts center that will seat nearly 300 people.
