Manchester City[edit]

Manchester City as a Premier League team involved in the 2018-19 UEFA Champions League started the EFL Cup in the third round, where they had been drawn away at Football League One club Oxford United. At the Kassam Stadium, Manchester City won 3-0 due to goals from Gabriel Jesus, Riyad Mahrez and Phil Foden.[1] In the fourth round, they were drawn with fellow Premier League club Fulham at home. At their City of Manchester Stadium, Manchester City won 2-0 via two goals from Brahim Diaz.[2] In the next round they were drawn away at fellow Premier League Leicester City. The match finished 1-1 at the King Power Stadium however Manchester City progressed after winning the resulting penalty shoot-out 3-1.[3] In the two legged semi-final, Manchester City drew Football Leeague One Burton Albion. Manchester City won the first leg at the City of Manchester Stadium 9-0 in their biggest win for 31 years due to four goals from Jesus and one each from Kevin De Bruyne, Oleksandr Zinchenko, Foden, Kyle Walker and Mahrez.[4] In the second leg at the Pirelli Stadium, Manchester City reached the final after a 1-0 victory (10-0 on aggregate) due to a goal from Sergio Aguero.[5]

Chelsea[edit]

Chelsea as a Premier League team involved in the 2018-19 UEFA Europa League started the EFL Cup in the third round where they played fellow Premier League Liverpool away. At Anfield, Chelsea won 2-1 due to goals from Emerson Palmieri and Eden Hazard.[6] In the next round, they drew Football League Championship side Derby County at home. At their Stamford Bridge, Chelsea won 3-2 owing to own goals from Derby's Fikayo Tomori and Richard Keogh with Cesc Fabregas scoring too[7] In the fifth round, they drew Premier League Bournemouth at home and won 1-0 with a goal from Hazard.[8] In the semi-finals they drew Premier League and London derby rivals Tottenham Hotspur. After a 1-0 loss at Wembley Stadium in the first leg, Chelsea progressed to the final with a 2-1 win in the second leg (resulting in a 2-2 score on aggregate) and winning the resulting penalty shoot out 4-2.[9]
