Your "Established date" edits to Highways in Puerto Rico

[edit]

Hello. I have undone your edit here to the Highways in Puerto Rico article because of lack of citations. If you have citations, feel free to undone my undo, and add the cites. Also, as for one road in particular, PR-2, we have a cite that, at least the Ponce section of that road, was established in the 1940s (Carmelo Rosario Natal. Ponce En su Historia Moderna: 1945-2002. Published by Secretaría de Cultura y Turismo of the Government of the Autonomous Municipality of Ponce. Ponce, Puerto Rico. 2003. p. 336.) The edit you made stated the established date for PR-2 was 1953. Since there was that one error, we must assume that there is a probability that at least some of other dates you added weren't correct either. This is one reason why you should add cites, as it allows other editors to check the source of the information added and rectify problem without having to bother the editor in question. Also, as you can imagine, listing incorrect dates can cause significant problems as such dates could propagate thru the encyclopedia to other articles (for example, the articles on the specific roads themselves) requiring considerable work in the future to get rid of all the error dates throughout the encyclopedia. BTW, you might want to create an account instead of editing via anonymous IP. It's easier to interact with contributors if they have an account, and I have noticed you have made many useful contributions to PR roadway articles but, without you being a register user, we cannot send you the Thank you notes we have wanted to send you in the past. @Mercy11: I also saw the dates placed by 24.50.193.43 in the lists and I took on the task of searching the Internet for a series of pages that could lead to the creation of a new article or list of old roads in Puerto Rico. I explain, according to the pages and documents that I reviewed, in the first half of the 20th century the roads had numbers different from those we know today (PR-10, current PR-123, was insular highway number 6), but I can not validate the contributions of 24.50.193.43 because the documents are very extensive and it is not always coincident that the 1953 was the year of such changes in the numbering system. I also invite 24.50.193.43 to create a registered account because I think he or she could help us with this matter, besides that his/her contributions during this time have been very good.
Here I share the pages that I found useful, in case you want to see them and save them for another time:
Puerto Rico Map of 1915 vs Puerto Rico Map of 1952 || Compare the numbers of the roads and see how in 1952 the current numbers already existed, so 1953 is incorrect.
This other reference is pure gold! These documents talk about the municipal and neighborhood boundaries, and many old numbers are mentioned there. Many of them include maps.
In this PDF and this other link you can also find evidences of the old numbers of the roads.
If I find more valuable pages, I will be sharing them in this discussion. Yarfpr (talk) 15:23, 29 April 2019 (UTC)[reply]
@Yarfpr: It's too unfortunate that the anon IP 24.50.193.43 hasn't decided to register. Perhaps he works for DTOP and his WP registration could mean him losing his job. There could be other reasons, so that's fine. IAE, Yes, I was aware that PR-10 (to be more precise PR-123, that is, the old road from Ponce to Adjuntas) was Rt-6 way back in the first half of the 20th century, but I never had a solid reference discussing it in text and didn't occur to me to use the map itself as a reference. Why not?; maps are published by independent, reliable publishers. Also thanks for sharing the link from UPR-Mayaguez. There's a wealth of info there as you said and, as these sources are many tines removed from the 'net after a while, I immediately downloaded a copy.
The date when a road opened can be tricky because, especially true of long roads, they are usually opened in segments. So which date do we use? The date when the first segment opened or when the last segment? Also, if when use a "completed date", what does completed mean? Does it mean the day of the ribbon cutting ceremony? The day when workers pack up and leave the work site for good? The day when the newspapers report the road is completed? some other date? Even if a year alone was used rather than a complete date (as in the table in question at List of highways in Puerto Rico for a roadway's date However if date is found, it should be used withe cite added. Mercy11 (talk) 20:23, 29 April 2019 (UTC)[reply]
@Mercy11: You are right in everything you say. Regarding the opening date, I venture to think that the day on which the first segment was opened could be taken into consideration, as long as an official number has already been assigned to be used throughout its entire route (both the completed as the remaining segments). As for the completion date, the day on which the ribbon was cut can be considered. On the other hand, only the year is placed on the list (at least that is shown in this example or this other), so the complete date should be shown on the link that serves as a reference. Manual addition of Road marker shields to Puerto Rico Infobox road article

[edit]

Hi. In reference to your edit here and parallel edits elsewhere, you may want to be aware that there is a process now in the pipeline here that will no longer make it necessary to add shields manually. For now, manipulating the road shield(s) that get displayed atop the Infobox road should be performed via proper combination of "route=" / "type=" entries. This also means that such manual additions may, in the future, not be allowed and your work may be reverted. Thanks for your other contributions. Mercy11 (talk) 00:55, 8 May 2019 (UTC)[reply]
