Welcome!

[edit]

Hello, and welcome to Wikipedia!

Someone using this IP address, 2604:2000:E010:1100:830:5DC8:933F:7447, has made edits to Barry Rosenstein that do not conform to our policies and therefore have been reverted. For more information on this, see Wikipedia's policies on vandalism and limits on acceptable additions. If you'd like to experiment with the syntax, please do so in the sandbox rather than in articles. If you did not do this, you may wish to consider getting a username to avoid confusion with other editors.

You don't have to log in to read or edit pages on Wikipedia, but creating an account is quick, free, requires no personal information, and has many benefits. Without a username, your IP address is used to identify you.

Some good links for newcomers are:

Please sign your name on talk pages using four tildes (~~~~); this will automatically produce your name and a timestamp. If you need help, check out Wikipedia:Questions, ask the Help Desk, or place {{helpme}} on your talk page and someone will show up shortly to answer your questions.

Again, welcome! Levivich 00:06, 5 October 2019 (UTC)[reply]

Thanks for editing, but please do not include people's addresses in articles, per our WP:BLPPRIVACY policy. Levivich 00:08, 5 October 2019 (UTC)[reply]
Thanks for dropping by. As you see, the policy focuses on two factors, among others. One is whether such information has been widely published by reliable sources. If so, the concern here is lesser. A second consideration is the level of notability of the person. If you like, contact the oversight team so that they can evaluate it and possibly remove it from the page history. Thus, for example, your deleting the (former) address of the musician Sting is not appropriate. Similarly, you would not delete reference to the former Presidents having lived at the White House, as that would not make sense. Please revert yourself, and if you like speak to the oversight team about your thinking in deleting Sting's former address, and how that stacks up with the above policy. 2604:2000:E010:1100:830:5DC8:933F:7447 (talk) 00:21, 5 October 2019 (UTC)[reply]
No, it doesn't focus on two factors. It says articles should not include postal addresses, e-mail addresses, telephone numbers, or other contact information for living persons, although links to websites maintained by the subject are generally permitted. Oversight has been contacted. Please do not add any more addresses to people's articles. Thank you. Levivich 00:33, 5 October 2019 (UTC)[reply]
You completely ignored the part that you yourself - above - had originally linked to that discusses rationale and factors. The very two factors I mention here. We do best when we read policies in context, rather than out of context. There is zero - absolutely zero - concern here, for example, vis-a-vis Sting's former address. You could not articulate a rationale, and looking at the policy it is clear why there is none. It is the same reason you would not delete reference to President Obama having lived in the White House. Please stop until we have heard from Oversight. I am hard pressed to understand your actions - I had already pointed out this issue, and it should be easy to grasp, yet I have not seen you revert yourself for example as to Sting's address (nor delete references to Presidents having lived in the White House). 2604:2000:E010:1100:830:5DC8:933F:7447 (talk) 00:39, 5 October 2019 (UTC)[reply]
I find WP:BLPPRIVACY to be very clear on this: If you see personal information such as phone numbers, addresses, account numbers, etc. in a BLP or anywhere on Wikipedia, edit the page to remove it and contact the oversight team so that they can evaluate it and possibly remove it from the page history. I removed it and contacted the oversight team as the policy instructs. I see no exception for former addresses or former phone numbers, etc. Levivich 00:43, 5 October 2019 (UTC)[reply]
No, dear IP, User:Levivich has a point. Also, I am an oversighter. Let's wait and see what my colleagues have to say--in the meantime I revdeleted some of your edits. Levivich, things are less clear-cut in some of these cases since there is verification and there's some pretty famous and notable things involved, including the building itself. Nonetheless, it is best to err on the side of caution. Thanks, Drmies (talk) 00:47, 5 October 2019 (UTC)[reply]
Thanks Dear Drmies. And thanks as well, as Levivich seemed to not be noticing the point, with pointing out that it is relevant (as pointed out in the considerations that I pointed to, which he does not seem to consider worth focusing on) that there's some pretty famous and notable things involved. Can you also, since you are joining, let me know what possible point - in a policy focused on identity theft - Levivich has in saying it requires that the fact that Sting lived at address X in the past .. which has been widely reported in US and UK press for many years ... must be deleted? I really, really don't see his point. 2604:2000:E010:1100:830:5DC8:933F:7447 (talk) 01:04, 5 October 2019 (UTC)[reply]
Drmies - on what basis did you remove my talk page edit here?[1] It was a good faith comment. If you have a different view, please write it. I don't think it is right for you to delete my talk page comment. 2604:2000:E010:1100:830:5DC8:933F:7447 (talk) 01:07, 5 October 2019 (UTC)[reply]
I think the edit summary made it pretty clear. Primefac (talk) 12:45, 5 October 2019 (UTC)[reply]
IP, I just heard from an oversighter, who has indeed suppressed a number of your edits. You may not be able to see that they did (that is, you may not, as an IP, be able to see the difference between a revdeleted entry and an oversighted entry), but that is the difference between a serious privacy issue and a less serious one. Please accept that these edits were not unproblematic. Thank you, Drmies (talk) 17:09, 5 October 2019 (UTC)[reply]
