Thank you to Tim Riley for your comments. I am glad you are a fan of Ernest Gowers and Plain Words. A new revision (based on the original text, but with annotations) will be coming out next year.

I don't know whether this is the right way to respond, but there does not seem to be a 'reply' button on your comment. I would welcome suggestions about the pages I have edited. Plain Words

The publication of the new edition (I have had the drawbridge up and the door bolted while I devoured it) has prompted me to overhaul and expand the shockingly brief Wikipedia article on the book. If you have time and disposition I'd be most grateful if you'd look in and add, change or comment ad lib. In particular, I'd be very interested indeed in your thoughts on whether (as I have long supposed) your grandfather used "a work of supererogation" in his original opening para as a sly joke or if he and his advisers all let a very un-plain phrase slip through in absence of mind.
