License tagging for Image:Secrets.jpg

Thanks for uploading Image:Secrets.jpg. Wikipedia gets thousands of images uploaded every day, and in order to verify that the images can be legally used on Wikipedia, the source and copyright status must be indicated. Images need to have an image tag applied to the image description page indicating the copyright status of the image. This uniform and easy-to-understand method of indicating the license status allows potential re-users of the images to know what they are allowed to do with the images.

Conflict of interest

If you have a close connection to some of the people, places or things you have written about on Wikipedia, you may have a conflict of interest. In keeping with Wikipedia's neutral point of view policy, edits where there is a conflict of interest, or where such a conflict might reasonably be inferred from the tone of the edit and the proximity of the editor to the subject, are strongly discouraged. Re: Orphaned fair use image? Wha'?!

Further to your message on my talk page, the reason the messages were left on your talk page about orphaned fair use images as they had been nominated for deletion and you were being informed. The reason these particular images were nominated is because they are avaiable only under fair use (the copyright is owned by someone else and they have not released the rights for anyone else to use). These "non-free" images have very limited acceptance here at WP. An image is only fair use when it is considered against the use of the image, for example, say an album cover contains image of the New York City skyline in its artwork. This image would likely qualify as fair use on a page about the album (and maybe the singer) but would not likely qualify as fair use on a page about New York City. Since the image you uploaded was only available under a claim of fair use and the image was not being used on any page (hence being called an orphan) it is nominated for deletion as there can be no justification to having this image at WP without it being used. I hope this clears up the issue. The two images I nominated have since been deleted (they stay nominated for about a week or so). --User:Gay Cdn (talk) (Contr) 13:47, 20 May 2007 (UTC)[reply]
