Hi Bamber. Per your email - there are two relevant guidelines - WP:EL and WP:SPAM. If you do nothing but link to your own site (especially if are getting advertising revenue from it) you are going to trigger the spam radars. My main objection to people doing this is that it affects the objectivity (the peer review aspect) of Wikipedia. If something is worth linking then someone will have already done it. You ask, "Is there a case perhaps for more selective links to HistoryWorld (and therefore fewer in number) than my rather exhaustive approach this morning?". This is definitely a better approach, but still goes against the guidelines I mentioned. If you think there is a case for a selective link placement, you should propose the link on the article's talk page, and let someone else do it. Hi again Bamber, thanks for letting us know about timesearch.info, and thanks for respecting the guidelines about conflicts of interest. It seems to me to be a quite appropriate link, and I will add my support for it in due course. I will add the link myself if nobody beats me to it. You may be interested to know that this has also been mentioned on the Wikipedia mailing list (link). I have a small doubt about the website calling itself Wikipedia TimeSearch and Wikipedia timelines, but we'll see if any eyebrows are raised. Photograph

Hello Mr Gascoigne; as well as being a Wikipedia editor & Administrator, I was a contestant on University Challenge in 1984, for the University of York. There is a general Userbox to celebrate this honour, which can be seen on this user page. It would be useful to have a similar photo of yourself to adorn the userbox for "older" participants such as myself, and your own article would also benefit from having one. I'm wondering if you have a suitable image which you would be prepared to donate free of copyright; simple reason is that images subject to copyright are not generally permitted, and certainly not outside the articles themselves. I couldn't find your Wikipedia:Image copyright tags|image copyright tags , being redirected to Wikipedia: File Copyright Tags. Here I had yesterday selected CC-BY, which is on the page for my jpeg as the Permission. Isn't this valid? BG

It's valid but the protocols mandate a separate licensing tag, which I've now added to both images. If you disagree with the licensing terms I've assumed were your intention, please drop me a note and I'll fix them. Cheers. Rodhullandemu 18:30, 23 January 2011 (UTC)

Thanks for putting it right. I can't actually see the difference, as it still just says CC-BY in the Permission field as intended. If you have a moment (for possible future purposes)what else did you add, and where? BG

There should be a licensing tag under the image summary box which specifies "CC-BY-3.0". It is created by adding this template: {{Cc-by-sa-3.0}}. I hope that is what you had in mind. Rodhullandemu 19:23, 23 January 2011 (UTC)
