The JRFG Certification is designed by Jump Rope For Good to offer internationally recognised certifications to professional rope-jumpers around the world. In collaboration with accrediting bodies[1][2], sports associations and world-class athletes[3], this certification system introduces a structured framework for skills qualification and provides a standardised benchmark for jump rope training.

Despite jump rope has been recognized as a proper sport[4][5], there are not many channels available for rope-jumpers to perform skill evaluation, making it difficult for improvements to take place. The JRFG Certification system is therefore developed to provide guidelines for rope-jumpers to get trained in a progressive manner. Advanced levels of certifications may appeal to those who wish to pursue a career in the industry, or retired athletes planning on a career transition.

Jump Rope For Good has been endorsed by a lot of professional bodies and educational institutions, including NASM[1] and AFAA[2]. All programmes are backed by teaching courses and examinations centering upon the foundation of rope-jumping, skills specification and training methodology. With advice from sports scientists and accredited instructors, a unique training model (3SBR) has been designed to deliver a clear education framework to learners.

JRFG adopts an incentive approach in supporting the sustainable development of rope-jumpers in society. Professionals certified by JRFG Certification programmes may receive job opportunities in the company or other related institutions.

Jump Rope as a Professional Sport

[edit]

Nowadays, jump rope is becoming more recognized as a proper sport. As the development of jump rope is becoming mature, there is a growing number in professional training for championships and career development around the globe. It is no longer merely a recreational sport but a full-fledged competitive one that requires physical exertion and skills.

In the 1900s when rope-jumping became popularized, two main organizations were set up to support the worldwide development of the sport, namely FISAC-IRSF and World Jump Rope Federation. They delivered guidelines for jump rope and hold regular championships all over the world. In 2019, the two institutions merged and became known as the International Jump Rope Union (IRJU), serving as the global governing body of the sport[6]. With the approval from the Global Association of International Sports Federations (GAISF) Council, the IJRU has become the 10th federation to obtain GAISF Observer Status, a great leap for the sport to be part of the Olympic family.[7]

Career Prospect

[edit]

As jump rope has evolved into a professional sport, more opportunities have been given to the ones who wish to make a career out of jumping. They can choose to become a professional athlete of national teams, or take up other supporting roles in the discipline.

  • Professional Athletes. With excellent skills and outstanding performance, elite jumpers may get chosen to become a professional athlete of their home countries. They will engage in intensive training all the time and compete in high-level competitions for different events. Right now, the IJRU World Championship is the largest international event where only qualified athletes are allowed to join. At times, Open tournaments will be held for everybody to join.
  • Coach. Retired athletes or those who have attained relevant certification can take up the role as a coach. Coaches are responsible for instructing learners, sharing their own jump rope experiences and skills with them. They arrange training sessions and analyze rope-jumpers ability to nurture new talents.
  • Examiner/Judges. Examiner and judges play an important role in jump rope examinations and competitions. They have to standardize the grading criteria and be very familiar with all the rules. All of them have to go through training and assessments to attain accreditation. Usually, these certification programmes consist of 3 levels. To become a judge at IJRU world championships, one has to be a Level 3 certified judge at IJRU[8].
  • Officiating Roles. They are the ones responsible for holding competitions, including positions like Facilitator. They have to be familiar with the flow and the regulations of different competitions to ensure a smooth running.

Programme Development Team

[edit]

The JRFG Certification System is developed by a group of professional athletes and coaches from the rope-skipping field. To ensure that all courses are in alignment with the learning outcomes, the syllabi is refined continuously under the advice of sports scientists. The S3BR Training Model is adopted as the teaching philosophy of training courses, forming a coherent set of principles for learners to meet the standard of IFJU events. The marking scheme endorsed by the system is outlined and reviewed by a panel of experienced examiners. To conduct quality control, the research team will collect feedback periodically to evaluate the learning impact of the programme. If necessary, further improvements will be made.

  • Pak Hung Cheung. Pak Hung Cheung is a professional athlete and coach with more than 5 years of experience. Representing the Hong Kong Team, he is a winner and record holder of a lot of world championships[9][10]. He is also the co-founder of JRFG and Hong Kong Institute of Rope Skipping[11] providing rope-skipping training to learners all over the world[12]. He is the Programme Director of the JRFG Certification.
  • The Advisory Committee.[13] The JRFG Advisory Committee is formed by athletes of national teams and winners of world championships. In addition to giving advice on JRFG certification system and programme syllabi, it monitors all courses regularly to ensure the consistency and quality of learners’ training.

S3BR Jump Rope Training Model. The JRFG Certification programmes follow the S3BR Model which is based on the standard of IJRU Events.

  • Speed (Training for speed - candidates have to complete Single Rope Speed in the 30-second Assessment)
  • 3 Attempts (Training for precision - candidates have to complete a series of skills in 10 seconds in 3 attempts)
  • Basic Skills (Training for the basics - candidates have to perform their technical skills repetitively in the 30-second Assessment)
  • Routine (Training for freestyle routine - candidates have to showcase sequences, techniques and rhythm in the Routine Assessment)

Education Pathway

[edit]

The JRFG Certification system is a gateway for rope-jumpers to master rope-jumping in a progressive manner. A number of programmes are offered to rope-jumpers of different interests and abilities. All of them are backed by training courses and examinations that are set in accordance with IRJU international standards. After attending the courses, candidates are required to take relevant examinations that assess their learning outcomes. Candidates who managed to pass will be awarded a certificate as a professional qualification of their expertise. The programmes are listed as follows:

Technical Certification Programme

[edit]

The syllabus of this programme is designed for rope-jumpers to further their skills. It centres on the foundation of jump rope, skills specification and training methodology. It is divided into three levels and certificates will be offered to each after candidates have passed the examination. Candidates can only attain them on a step-by-step basis in order to go through all basic (L1), intermediate (L2) and advanced (L3) training. No skipping of levels is allowed.

The examination formats of the 3 levels are the same and they are arranged in ascending order of difficulty. There are both written and technical assessments. For the written assessment, candidates are required to answer multiple-choice questions that cover the regulations and development of jump rope, as well as information of local championships. As for the technical assessment, candidates are required to perform the tricks of jump rope in 5 sections, including Speed and Routine Event.

The examination will be carried out either onsite or online, depending on the region you are in. If the onsite option is not available, teaching materials will be delivered through an e-portal. Candidates are required to complete the written test online and upload videos of them taking the technical assessment. Results will be released in around three weeks time.

Candidates who have attended the course and passed the examination will be awarded a certificate from JRFG. Completion of courses also enables candidates to earn continuing education credits from NASM and AFAA.[1][2]

Trainer Certification Programme

[edit]

This is a more advanced programme for rope-jumpers to attain qualification for professional coaching. In this programme, learners will become familiar with all the jump rope tricks as well as the requirements of being a professional trainer.

There are three attainment levels in total. All candidates are only allowed to join progressively starting at Level 1. The L1 training course mainly focuses on the basics, such as the roles and abilities of a coach. In L2 and L3, learners will acquire more practical knowledge of effective management, communication skills, and course design.

The examination of this certification programme consists of two parts. Candidates have to go through both the Technical Certification Examination (see above) and the Coaching Examination to get qualified. Holders of the Technical Certification Certification will be exempted from the first part. The Coaching Examination includes 30 multiple-choice questions on coaching methodologies. For each level, the content will be different but the number of questions remains the same. Candidates will be given 60 days to complete both parts.

Examiner Certification Programme

[edit]

This programme provides rope-jumpers more insight into the assessment process. It covers all the regulations and marking guidelines for JRFG examinations. Candidates will undertake hands-on training to develop the ability to mark consistently and accurately. The prerequisite of joining this programme is the completion of at least one level of the Technical or Trainer Certification Programme.

This programme consists of 3 levels. For each level, candidates are required to watch a number of examination videos and score according to the marking guidelines. Candidates will then be graded by some experienced examiners based on their accuracy and consistency. The whole examination will be conducted online and candidates will be given 60 days to finish it.

Candidates can only complete the whole programme level by level regardless of prior marking experiences. After gaining accreditation, candidates can choose to become an examiner to grade the assessments of both the Technical and Trainer Certification Programmes.
