Il prigioniero

Sorry to be slow replying. The article on Radio by Lionel Salter in The New Grove Dictionary of Opera, pp 1212-4, has a list of radio operas which includes Il prigionero. I haven't seen the opera's score and I don't know why the opera was performed on RAI before it appeared on stage, but Dallapiccola must have agreed to its being broadcast and presumably thought it suitable for radio performance. Salter says that most radio operas "were shorter than stage operas ...the best of them avoided elaborate plots that might confuse the unaided ear". I've seen a semi-staging of the opera in London and it seems to fit what Salter says. As for the date, it's usual in opera articles to give the date of first performance rather than the date when the opera was completed.
