Mentorship

[edit]

Hiya! I've been assigned as your mentor! If I'm correct, it looks like you've written in peer reviewed journals and you're looking to see if you can use them to help flesh out anything on Wikipedia? I've had some limited experience in writing some medical related Wikipedia articles, so hopefully I can help you on that end. In any case, I see that you live in Baltimore - I actually live a little further down south in Virginia! Small world, huh?

Some things that I can definitely recommend off the bat is that you go through one of Wikipedia's training programs, either WP:TRAINING or WP:ADVENTURE. Those can give you a brief overview of the editing process and that way we can see which areas you may need more help/explanation with, other than writing. (TRAINING is more straightforward powerpoint type stuff whereas ADVENTURE is more set up like a game, so it's up to you as to which you use. I know that generally TRAINING is more recommended, but ADVENTURE is slightly more interactive.) Also, since you are interested in potentially adding your work to Wikipedia in some form or fashion, you will definitely need to briefly read over WP:COI and WP:SPS. I'm not overly worried since your work so far doesn't really show that you have any huge bias (ie, that if you do have a COI with anything you've written, it's not obvious), but it's good to look over these policies just in case. I'm also not really worried about whether or not we can use your sources in an article, mainly because of this. If you're working with an institute of that reputation and you're posting in journals of equal repute, odds are extremely high that they can be used. My only word of caution would be to make sure that you add them sparingly in order to avoid scrutiny.

Anywho, looking forward to working with you! Tokyogirl79 (。◕‿◕。) 04:55, 14 July 2015 (UTC)[reply]

Hi, Tokyogirl79! Sorry for the delay. I wasn't sure how to reply to your message - to write on your user page or here...Yes, I would like to be mentored. Indeed, I publish in peer-reviewed journals. My goal is to document some of the history of my department (biographies, etc.) and to contribute to conceptual articles on epidemiology and kidney disease. Your guidance would be appreciated.
