COI
[edit]Your addition of links appears to have a pattern indicating a conflict of interests. Make sure all your edits make wikipedia a better encyclopedia. Please read WP:COI. Thanks. WAS 4.250 16:43, 3 June 2007 (UTC)
Spamming
[edit]Please do not add inappropriate external links to Wikipedia. Wikipedia is not a mere directory of links nor should it be used for advertising or promotion. Inappropriate links include (but are not limited to) links to personal web sites, links to web sites with which you are affiliated, and links that exist to attract visitors to a web site or promote a product. See the external links guideline and spam policies for further explanations of links that are considered appropriate. If you feel the link should be added to the article, then please discuss it on the article's talk page rather than re-adding it. See the welcome page to learn more about Wikipedia. Thank you. - If you continue to add links to your website indiscriminately, you will be blocked for spamming without more warning. Take a look at WP:COI and WP:SPAM for what is and isn't appropriate. WilyD 21:02, 3 June 2007 (UTC)
I've clearly got some things to learn. Is this the place where I can communicate with you? cville roger 21:14, 3 June 2007 (UTC)
- Yes, you can still post to your own talk page. Conflicts of interest are always dicey areas, especially if people are experts, but constantly introducing external links to your own website crosses into the realm of spamming - in the future, if you're uncertain, just ask. People are generally pretty friendly and helpful. I'd rather not have blocked you since you seemed to be acting in good faith but other editors seemed unable to get your attention, so I didn't see any other recourse. If you're looking for how to get started, I see User:WAS 4.250 already posted a few choice selections, but I'll give you a more expanded reading list:
I'm checking out these references, but I don't think I've got a conflict of interest, and I'm definitely not spamming. I was linking to neurtal, science research content from uni versities. I didn't even know people were trying to get my attention until I was blocked. Their comments weren't showing up anywhere that I could see. But then, this is all new to me, and I'll be more careful. cville roger 03:02, 7 June 2007 (UTC)
- Well, there are sometimes bugs where the "New Messages" banner doesn't show up ... you might be about to find out at the Village pump. As for spamming, it's a natural conclusion that someone who's constantly inserting a link to a website, in some very tenuous connections, and as a new account is almost certainly inserting links to their website, as usually turns out to be the case. I reverted a lot of the additions you added, but some looked possibly legitimate ones that I left alone (typically ones where you'd added content). In a general sense linking to scientific content is alright (although I'll caution you on a personal note that science content of newspapers is almost always wrong) but linking repeated, especially at the kind of speeds that make it look dubious that you can properly evaluate the appropriateness of the link, is likely to be taken as spamming, and people are likely to conclude you work for newswise. For some websites, repeated linking is maybe not inappropriate, but the more random and unknown, the less likely people are to take it well (I link to a lot of articles through ADS and JSTOR, but that's slightly different, because they're well known repositories of scientific papers, as an example). More thoughtful use is likely to help too - if your links are all necessary and appropriate, people will be less likely to complain. Hope that helps. WilyD 12:56, 7 June 2007 (UTC)
Thanks, WilyD. I got on a tear last Sunday and was having fun. I'll slow down and try to learn more about how everything works. cville roger 11:58, 8 June 2007 (UTC)
- No problem - many very valuable editors start off way worse. Don't be afraid to be bold! - and if you're not getting "New messages" warnings, put your talk page on your watch list. Cheers. WilyD 14:17, 8 June 2007 (UTC)

If you have any questions the best place to look is probably Wikipedia:Help Desk. Regards WilyD 21:31, 3 June 2007 (UTC)
Where are you, by the way, and what's your primary domain of interest on Wikipedia? cville roger 02:42, 9 June 2007 (UTC)
- You can always find me at User talk:WilyD and Special:Contributions/WilyD will show you all the edits I've made. I work on a variety of stuff - you can see if you look, and I bounce around a little. Right now I'm working on AU Microscopii the most, I guess. Regards WilyD 06:48, 10 June 2007 (UTC)
Spamming Block
[edit]Wikipedia welcomes all kinds of contributers, but it is not appropriate for you to spam Wikipedia with links to your website. Since you haven't responded to requests to stop, I've been forced to put a 24 - hour block on your account to stop your disruptive editing. In the future, try suggesting external links you think may be valuable but which you have a conflict of interest with on the talk page of the relevent article. Thanks WilyD 21:10, 3 June 2007 (UTC)
