Hello, Dannylookup! Welcome to Wikipedia! Thank you for your contributions. You may benefit from following some of the links below, which will help you get the most out of Wikipedia. If you have any questions you can ask me on my talk page, or place {{helpme}} on your talk page and ask your question there. Please remember to sign your name on talk pages by clicking or by typing four tildes "~~~~"; this will automatically produce your name and the date. If you are already excited about Wikipedia, you might want to consider being "adopted" by a more experienced editor or joining a WikiProject to collaborate with others in creating and improving articles of your interest. Click here for a directory of all the WikiProjects. Finally, please do your best to always fill in the edit summary field when making edits to pages. Happy editing! Thank you Rashers. In response I would say I have no conflict of interest, I do not work for nor represent the long disbanded RIC, any more so than any of the other editors or contributors to the Wiki article. I see now that discussion forums (Yahoo Groups) are excluded as external links (a pity, given the resources available on the web); but I note that personal web pages are also banned. However I see the one external link remaining is to a personal web site - can you please clarify the logic of that to me? Is it acceptable that any personal web site can be referenced as an external link in Wikipedia?
Can you also clarify the policy on naming conventions. I note that the city name Londonderry has been edited to Derry. Whilst I have no issues with either name the title Londonderry remains the legal name of the city, so can you please clarify why that edit has been allowed to stand?

Wow! You've asked quite a bit there. To give you some links to peruse while I think about the specifics, I'll change the 'Welcome' template to one more appropriate, and will get back to you when I've a bit more time (and not just dipping in and out, as at present). (See also WP:IMOS). Happy reading. RashersTierney (talk) 15:45, 1 September 2012 (UTC)[reply]
Regarding external links and the Royal Irish Constabulary article, I suppose what is or isn't appropriate comes down to personal judgement wrt the guidelines. A number of other editors have expressed their views by removing some links. To get their considered reasons you could ask the question at that article's Talk Page. On your other topic, Wikipedia policy on article names is covered at Wikipedia:Article titles. If an issue is 'controversial' outside of Wikipedia, you can be pretty confident it has been debated at some length here too. A stable title is as a result of Wikipedia:Consensus. This is certainly the case wrt Derry/Londonderry as you will see from the red-bordered notice at the relevant Talk Page (just click on the 4 linked archive pages in the header to get a sense of the years of discussion}. 'Official names' don't trump consensus. If you have any follow up questions, don't hesitate to ask. Best. RashersTierney (talk) 22:16, 1 September 2012 (UTC)[reply]
