Multiple copies of articles and Redirects

[edit]

Hi Daphne,

Thanks for contributing Motherhood constellation and The Interpersonal world of the Infant. I notice that you created two copies of each article. Wikipedia has a feature that makes life easier: it's called the "redirect." When you have a subject with more than one possible name, such as "The Interpersonal world of the Infant" and "Interpersonal world of the Infant," it's best to create the article using only one title, and then create a redirect with the other title. The benefits to Wikipedia are two-fold: (1) there's only one article, so it doesn't take up so much room on the disks in the computers; (2) whenever anyone edits the article, it's only necessary to edit one article; there aren't two articles that can get out of synch with each other.

Here's how to create a redirect. After you've created the real article, type the other name in the Search box. For example, if the real article is already at "The Interpersonal world of the Infant" type "Interpersonal world of the Infant" in the Search box. (Don't type the quotation marks.) Then click the Search button, and click the red "Create the Article" link. A blank box appears. You'll see a row of buttons above the box. Click the button that says "#R" (it's near the middle). This puts the text #REDIRECT [[Insert text]] into the box, and the words "Insert text" are in white letters on a black background. Click those words, and they disappear; in their place type the title of the real article (for example, "The Interpersonal world of the Infant"—again without the quotation marks). Now just click Save page and you've created the redirect.

You'll find lots more information at Help:Redirect.

Thanks again for contributing to Wikipedia.
