Hello Deseretmusic. The nature of your edits gives the impression you have an undisclosed financial stake in promoting a topic, but you have not complied with Wikipedia's mandatory paid editing disclosure requirements. Paid advocacy is a category of conflict of interest (COI) editing that involves being compensated by a person, group, company or organization to use Wikipedia to promote their interests. Undisclosed paid advocacy is prohibited by our policies on neutral point of view and what Wikipedia is not, and is an especially serious type of COI; the Wikimedia Foundation regards it as a "black hat" practice akin to black-hat search-engine optimization.

Paid advocates are very strongly discouraged from direct article editing, and should instead propose changes on the talk page of the article in question if an article exists. If the article does not exist, paid advocates are extremely strongly discouraged from attempting to write an article at all. At best, any proposed article creation should be submitted through the articles for creation process, rather than directly.

Regardless, if you are receiving or expect to receive compensation for your edits, broadly construed, you are required by the Wikimedia Terms of Use to disclose your employer, client and affiliation. You can post such a mandatory disclosure to your user page at User:Deseretmusic. The template {{Paid}} can be used for this purpose – e.g. in the form: {{paid|user=Deseretmusic|employer=InsertName|client=InsertName}}. If I am mistaken – you are not being directly or indirectly compensated for your edits – please state that in response to this message. Otherwise, please provide the required disclosure. In either case, do not edit further until you answer this message. 331dot (talk) 16:08, 26 October 2023 (UTC)[reply]

Do you have anything to do with the User:Provomusic account who uploaded the image of the band that you used in this draft? 331dot (talk) 16:11, 26 October 2023 (UTC)[reply]

Hey! I am not being compensated for my edits. I'm a fan of Utah music in general and an avid concertgoer and armchair music historian. I do have the Provomusic account and originally was planning on uploading this page through that account (I uploaded the image), but I saw on my talk page that I had a message that recommended changing my username because editors were worried I was connected with Provo Music Magazine. Provo Music Magazine is one of 3 music publications in Utah, in addition to SLUG Mag and City Weekly. I've changed my name to Deseretmusic to hopefully help differentiate myself. Tbh this is kind of frustrating. I appreciate you guys being watchdogs on this issue, but am I just blacklisted now from writing about significant bands out of my region? I'm trying to comply with advice I've been given. Deseretmusic (talk) 23:05, 26 October 2023 (UTC)[reply]
I asked if you were associated with the other account because the other account claimed the photo of the bad as their own personal work, but it seems to be a professionally taken publicity image. If you were not the photographer, you can't claim it as your personal work. Typically, the copyright of a photo belongs to the photographer. If the publicity image was released with a copyright permitting its reuse for any purpose with attribution, you need to show that. Otherwise, the image will need to be deleted. 331dot (talk) 23:27, 26 October 2023 (UTC)[reply]
This is why I asked if you were a paid editor. If you aren't, okay, but this issue will need to be addressed. Thanks 331dot (talk) 23:28, 26 October 2023 (UTC)[reply]
Sincerely, thank you for your help and your explanation! :) I tracked down the copyright holder. His name is Nick Tate, and the photo shoot was a work for hire for the band. So the photo should fall under free use with Attribution. I've updated the license on the image instead of "Own Work." I have also added Nick Tate's attribution to the caption on the band's page.
