List of Irish Americans
[edit]I have removed 6 scientists from List of Irish Americans. Their article gives, as far as I can see, no evidence of their Irish ancestry. The Banner talk 23:01, 20 October 2023 (UTC)
- The only possible origin of a person with a surname that begins with the prefix "O" is Irish. See this article:
- https://www.tribstar.com/community/be-aware-of-patronymic-prefixes-when-researching/article_acd5184e-81c0-51b4-925d-9cc1a0814f80.html#:~:text=In%20contrast%20to%20Mc%2D%20and,without%20question%20an%20Irish%20patronymic. Famouspeoplelogging (talk) 23:14, 20 October 2023 (UTC)
- You need reliable sources that specifically state the subject is of Irish Ancestry. Assuming each person with an "O" username is Irish based on a single source is a mix of original research and synthesis.-- Ponyobons mots 23:18, 20 October 2023 (UTC)
- It is common sense that these names are unique to Ireland, it is not a form of original research. This standard does not seem to be carried over to the list of famous German-Americans, where a last name with the prefix "Von" is seen as adequate evidence of German ancestry. Like the analogous Irish case with the prefix O', everyone knows "Von" has german origins.
- See the German-american case of Franz Von Holzhausen as one example of this double standard. You will see in his wikipedia article that no evidence is given of german heritage yet he is allowed to be included in the wikipedia page titled: List_of_German_Americans Famouspeoplelogging (talk) 23:32, 20 October 2023 (UTC)
- Names are not always reliable. Just watch this movie: The Matchmaker (1997 film). The Banner talk 23:23, 20 October 2023 (UTC)
- Then why is this standard allowed on the list of German-American names concerning the prefix "Von"? See my comment above. Famouspeoplelogging (talk) 23:36, 20 October 2023 (UTC)
- It is not. A name with the prefix "Von" can be found in every region where German is or was spoken. For example. Georg von Trapp (a real person) was Austrian, not German. The Banner talk 00:10, 21 October 2023 (UTC)
- Regardless of where the historical origins of "Von" are believed to be, then why is Franz von Holzhausen allowed on the analogous List of German Americans page? His own Wikipedia page illustrates no german origins, and no citation is provided on the the List of German Americans page as well. Famouspeoplelogging (talk) 00:17, 21 October 2023 (UTC)
- See source 4. The Banner talk 00:26, 21 October 2023 (UTC)
- Ok I agree in that case. Famouspeoplelogging (talk) 00:44, 21 October 2023 (UTC)
