Hello. I would like to add a more personal note (not just a templated message) on your changes to the Charlotte Fire Department. I notice that this is the only article you have edited. I am guessing that you are affiliated with this department? I would caution you to read about Conflict of interest. Removing material related to the the truck crashes because it may reflect poorly on your department is not appropriate. Additionally, you should read about What Wikipedia is not, specifically the section about WIkipedia not being a blog or personal website. It appears that you are attempting to add unsourced details about the department to promote and give inner details. That should be done on the departments website, not in an encyclopedia. If you have any questions at all or if I can be helpful in anyway, please do not hesitate to leave a message on my talk page. Or you may respond here. If you choose to respond here, please place {{Ping|Zackmann08}} at the start of your response. That will alert me to come read your response. Thank you! --Zackmann08 (Talk to me/What I been doing) 19:47, 27 July 2015 (UTC)[reply]

Notice of Conflict of interest noticeboard discussion

[edit]

Information icon This message is being sent to inform you that there is currently a discussion at Wikipedia:Conflict of interest/Noticeboard regarding a possible conflict of interest incident in which you may be involved. Thank you.

@Zackmann08:

Ok I understand the ladder incidents should stay on the page, I get that. But the section with the stations, some areas are incorrect. Also what is wrong with the information I had about the administration, and the differences of engines, ladders, rescues, haz-mat? Yes I am affiliated with the department, I've been a firefighter with them for 7 years. Recently I had some members of the department asked me what happened to the page, because they know I worked on it, I said I'll look into it. What gave me the push is last week while at headquarters, Fire Chief Jon Hannan asked me about the page and told me to fix it. So since there are rules with wikipedia, what can I do and not do?
Let me address a few of your questions.
  • One issue is that this is an encyclopedia. If you want to go into details about each of your rigs, that is something that will need to be done on your department's website.
  • If there is information that is incorrect (for example if the page currently says there are 42 stations and there are actually 45), that can and should absolutely be fixed. But it should be done by updating what is already there using the format that the page currently has. Things like the phone number for each fire station have no place in an encyclopedia (see Not a phone book).
  • The same logic applies for discussions about each of the branches of the department. While I understand the desire to inform about the department, a list of administrative functions (Accounts Payable, Budget, Health & Safety, etc.) is not encyclopedic.
On a personal note, I hope you do not feel attacked in any way, shape or form. I am a huge supporter of the fire services. I myself am a Fire Photographer out in Southern California and work closely with multiple departments. I understand the desire to have a page that about your department and it should absolutely be accurate! One thing I would like to point out, the apparatus information that is listed on the page was pulled (by me) directly from your departments own website. See the Operations Section and Stations Section. So if the apparatus listed on the page are incorrect it is because the departments own website is incorrect as well, so make sure to update your own site also! (Though I will absolutely not rule out the possibility of a typo on my end...) One piece of advice, check out some of the more well done pages for other departments. For example LAFD or LACoFD. Be sure to note how things are cited. This is essential. If you have additional questions, let me know. --Zackmann08 (Talk to me/What I been doing) 20:40, 27 July 2015 (UTC)[reply]
@Zackmann08: No disrespect but how do I know that your someone who is actually with Wikipedia and this is not a spam. I'm just frustrated that I worked weeks and months on fixing this page and then it was all erased. Not one thing was saved. You said details about the rigs don't belong on wikipedia, well please explain to me the LAFD fireboats section. It goes into detail of their 5 fireboats. On other pages I have seen their department showing the rank structure, that was removed from the original CFD page. Also on the original CFD page it said Haz-Mat 3 is owned by the state and it covers other counties if it's ever needed, which is similar to the FEMA USAR. Why was the Haz-Mat 3 info taken down. Most importantly, why was the history taken down. I know the history should have stayed up because a history can be found on most pages on wikipedia, that one I would like an answer please.
There are multiple ways you can see I am not a spammer. Just take a look at my user page to see some of what I have worked on, User:Zackmann08 or see my contributions --> Special:Contributions/Zackmann08. Additionally, you seem to have a basic misunderstanding about how wikipedia works... Your statement "how do I know that your someone who is actually with Wikipedia"... I am not "with wikipedia"... This is an open source website, ANYONE can edit it. I am not a wikipedia employee. The only thing that gives me any "authority" (for lack of a better word) is that I've been editing and contributing to Wikipedia for over 3 and a half years. That doesn't mean "I'm powerful because I've been here", it just means I have a good understanding of the rules and how things work.
I understand and respect your frustration. I have been there myself. Unfortunately that is the nature of the beast. Wikipedia is an open source wiki. There is no ownership of material. (please actually look at those links...). Again, please try to understand I am trying to help you.
As for the LAFD, the difference is that everything on that page is cited and referenced. NOTHING on the CFD page was and thus constituted original research which is not allowed. (Again, please actually go to that link.) When I said "details about the rigs do not belong" I meant that Make and model information doesn't belong. The LAFD has 162 engines... There is no listing of who makes each one of them. Your original content had a make and model listed for each apparatus. Additionally, the apparatus listed on the LAFD page are special and unique rigs. Fireboats for example, or "Light Forces/Task Forces" which the LAFD is well known for and are well documented. There is simply nothing encyclopedic about the fact that a certain department has a dozen fire engines... So does every other department in the world.
I have attempted to point you in the right direction with multiple different links, and some documentation about how Wikipedia works. What you choose to do with that information is up to you. I can be a resource and be helpful or I can leave you to do what you will if you think I am just a spammer... But you should also read about assuming good faith. --Zackmann08 (Talk to me/What I been doing) 21:58, 27 July 2015 (UTC)[reply]

@Zackmann08: LAFD fireboats shows how much water it can flow in gallons and liters. With the CFD rigs it had how much water the water tanks are in gallons and liters. So because there was one mistake, the entire section was taken down. You never answered my question. Why was the history taken out.

I apologize, I did forget to mention that one though I will say you sarcastic tone about "because there was one mistake, the entire section was taken down" does not inspire me to continue to assist you. The history section was removed because it was plagiarized. Additionally, the issue was not water in tank vs flow rate. The issue (as I clearly stated) was that fireboats are unique apparatus and SO notable that they actually have their own articles, Warner L. Lawrence (fireboat) for example. Anyway, you have now twice in a row chosen to only acknowledge one tiny part of the lengthy response I have left you. I have been attempting to assist you and your response has been to fight about my response. I have given you detailed explanations and tried to point you in the right direction. Your attitude does not inspire me to continue to help you so you can seek assistance elsewhere. Best of luck. --Zackmann08 (Talk to me/What I been doing) 22:59, 27 July 2015 (UTC)[reply]
