Regarding the Flinders Coat of Arms[edit]

Do you have a source for when the university formally discarded it? I can find where it was adopted, and the new logo adopted, but it's not clear that the logo has completely superseded the coat of arms.[1] —C.Fred (talk) 03:35, 5 April 2024 (UTC)[reply]

Replace the text "Your reason here" with the reasons you believe the block was an error, and publish the page.

Hello

Can I please clarify a few things? We chose the name as we are the Flinders University communications team. The only edits we made were to correct the university's logo, for which we included COI disclosures. This was because another user continually changed reverted edits by other users regarding our old vs new logo, making the article factually incorrect. We also updated our campus locations to be factually correct as Flinders no longer has a site at Victoria Square in Adelaide city. We used a COI for that too.

Could you please confirm whether these edits are considered promotion?

Hello,

The reverted edits from the other user were from a static IP address used by the Flinders University computer network. The user removed mentions of the Vice-Chancellor's salary from a Wikipedia article about him before making the exact same edits you've made. This doesn't mean that it was a staff member but I temporarily reverted their edits and requested that user to start a topic on the talk page instead since it was obviously a COI edit. I'm sorry if it's frustrating but submitting edit requests properly prevents an undisclosed paid or conflict of interest template being added to the top of the article or the IP address or account being blocked in this case.

I added the following summary when I reverted the edits from the other user:

"Temporarily revert unexplained removals from potential COI to older version. If you are close to the subject, please consider starting a topic on the talk page instead of editing related articles directly"

While you sort-of have declared a COI, this is from a different account with a username that gives an impression that the editor may be both paid and employed by the university and not just a student with a conflict of interest. You should have:

not used a username affiliated with or representing an organisation;
made it clear on your user page, the talk page of the affected article and in the edit summaries that you are a paid editor;
also mentioned who is paying you and on whose behalf you are making the edits; and
propose edits on the affected article's talk page instead of editing it directly.

This is what other universities have done and their requested edits - no matter how big or small - either get approved, modified or rejected. There is nothing wrong with doing this. The Edit Request Wizard is a helpful tool that makes the process easier. In addition, if you're the same user who removed the Vice-Chancellor's salaries, it might also be a sockpuppetry violation since you said that it was another user but made other edits that are identical to said user.

I was originally unable to find an online resource that showed whether the emblem was a coat of arms or a trademark. A lot of universities have an official seal (e.g. Stanford and MIT) or a grant of arms (e.g. La Trobe and RMIT), with the latter being more difficult to change. These universities usually have a corporate brand identity that is separate to the seal or arms used on official documents such as degree parchments and a brand update doesn't necessarily mean that the university has stopped using it.

I've gone ahead and added the new logo based on your information, which looks really pretty and creative by the way, but feel free to let me know if it's still incorrect. I don't know the process for removing the old emblem but it's currently violating it's own fair use rationale since it's not in the infobox. I'm unsure whether that means it could be removed or the fair use rationale should be updated but I've left it there as-is since a more experienced editor has re-added it. You can try appealing the block by proposing a new username as stated above. Alternatively, I don't believe there's any rule against making a new account assuming you follow these guidelines.
