WikiCup 2023 September newsletter

The fourth round of the competition has finished, with anyone scoring less than 673 points being eliminated. It was a high scoring round with all but one of the contestants who progressed to the final having achieved an FA during the round. The highest scorers were

• Epicgenius, with 2173 points topping the scores, gained mainly from a featured article, 38 good articles and 9 DYKs. He was followed by
• Sammi Brie, with 1575 points, gained mainly from a featured article, 28 good articles and 50 good article reviews. Close behind was
• Thebiguglyalien, with 1535 points mainly gained from a featured article, 15 good articles, 26 good article reviews and lots of bonus points.

Between them during round 4, contestants achieved 12 featured articles, 3 featured lists, 3 featured pictures, 126 good articles, 46 DYK entries, 14 ITN entries, 67 featured article candidate reviews and 147 good article reviews. Congratulations to our eight finalists and all who participated! It was a generally high-scoring and productive round and I think we can expect a highly competitive finish to the competition.

Remember that any content promoted after the end of round 4 but before the start of round 5 can be claimed in round 5. Remember too that you must claim your points within 10 days of "earning" them and within 24 hours of the end of the final. If you are concerned that your nomination will not receive the necessary reviews, please list it on Wikipedia:WikiCup/Reviews. It would be helpful if this list could be cleared of any items no longer relevant. If you want to help out with the WikiCup, please do your bit to keep down the review backlogs! You have been blocked from editing for a period of 72 hours for creating an extremely overblown AN thread [permalink] (comparisons to Holocaust deniers; "I hope the article is free from tyranny"), then harassing a user who sided with the reported users ("Do you want me to report you ... I am not screwing around here!") and doubling down after being told to stop ("I just warned [them] to not enable the disruptive behavior Ssilvers got a section for"). Our administrative processes are not a cudgel for you to use to cow opponents into submission, nor a free-for-all where you can get away with saying anything. In light of your clean block log, this is a short block, but please understand that this was serious misbehavior, of the sort that can lead to an indefinite block if it becomes a recurring problem. Once the block has expired, you are welcome to make useful contributions.

I am just going to respond to this nicely, because I at least would like to edit other articles on here without one incident unfairly preventing me from doing that. In fact, I was providing contributive edits to a video game article when this block began.

You have no idea how furious I am about this. I literally was about to throw my computer screen out the window over it! Since 2021, I have felt like I am on egg shells with others, trying not to get punished for things that do not warrant it, such as calling out edits I have interpreted to be out of ignorance or bad faith, because of other users accusing me of incivility or an inability to handle a disagreement. And frankly, it has affected by mental well-being when editing any article, because you never know what other user could do to you. And this discourse was honestly a traumatic reminder of previous experiences to me. To put it simply: I feel like I am being bossed around.

This is the first time a block has resulted from it, the equivalence of a criminal record in real-life. For my perspective, you blocked me (for a limited time, in all fairness) with misinterpretations of what I commented while letting Rome burn at the hands of another individual. If you feel your block was justified and the situation was completely different from how I described it, I will respect it. Frankly, you do not have to worry about whatever "misbehavior" took place at ANI happening again, because I am not commenting there again. Honestly, I do not trust admins to make the right decisions anymore, and I will not forget what happened here. I wrote an essay a while ago, User:Tamzin/Guidance for editors with mental illnesses, which I should probably retitle, because it applies to all mental health considerations, not just diagnosable illnesses. At AN you mentioned brain fog, and here you're mentioning trauma-related anxieties (if that's an accurate paraphrase). I'd encourage you to take a look at what I've written there, particularly guiding principles one and two. If you feel you can't edit without raising your anxiety levels, hey, that's a situation I've been in, several times. Each time, I've stepped away for a while—sometimes for a few days, sometimes for a year or more—and always been the better for it. To be honest, I'd probably be indeffed by now if I hadn't taken those breaks when I needed to. Indeffed again, that is. I got that "criminal record" in 2012, when I was 16. Even with the indef reversed, for years I felt like it followed me around, the same anxiety you're describing. And you know what? In the end, it did not prevent 340 people from supporting me at RfA. WikiCup 2023 November newsletter

The WikiCup is a marathon rather than a sprint and all those reaching the final round have been involved in the competition for the last ten months, improving Wikipedia vastly during the process. After all this hard work, BeanieFan11 has emerged as the 2023 winner and the WikiCup Champion. The finalists this year were:-
