Coltrane as 12 Steps[edit]

Sure I recommend that you review these pages briefly: Wikipedia doesn't publish original research, Wikipedia requires reliable sources, and fringe theories require little--if any--attention. Simply put, Coltrane and A Love Supreme aren't commonly associated with the 12 Steps/AA method. It might be true that there are similarities, but we need a source (really several good ones) that make this connection. If you have sources that support this claim, then please add them. Policy Wikipedia seeks for content that is verifiable, not true. There are an infinite number of truths which are inappropriate for Wikipedia: what you ate for breakfast, Taylor Swift's shoe size, 0 + 89,988 = 89,988, and so on. To decide if something is appropriate for Wikipedia, ask yourself the following questions:

Did I come up with this theory/fact? If so, this violates WP:OR--Wikipedia does not publish original research.
Where did I get this information? Is it from a reliable source?
Is this a marginal fringe theory or trivial fact?

Sources Strictly speaking, academics and scholarship aren't necessary for sources--e.g. newspapers or rock criticism are completely appropriate places to find connections about pop music. In the case of a single-source theory, you have to weigh how respectable and reliable that source is. In your example, Lewis is recognized as an authority on Coltrane--others will cite Lewis. So even if he originates a theory and no one else explicitly cites that, it's worth mentioning. If he originates the theory and then others run with it, it's worth more discussion. If several sources independently offer similar (or competing!) theories on the same topic, then it might demand an entire section in the biography. Etc. It can certainly be confusing sometimes to determine what is or is not an appropriate source, but it's not necessary to dig through JSTOR--a simple Google search and being savvy about your sources is all that's needed.
