Article For Creation: General Questions

[edit]

Hi JarrahTree, thanks for welcoming. I wanted to know about creating an article and then getting it published. Is it compulsory for an article to go through the AFC Process(article for creation). ? Taal Saptak (talk) 08:09, 29 April 2018 (UTC)[reply]

A small further note about "described in year" categories: when you add navigation templates, e.g. as in this edit, they automatically add the parent category, in this case Category:Fish described in the 20th century, so if it's already present, you should remove it to avoid duplication.

Actually, you can use {{Category in year}} to add both parent categories automatically. For example at Category:Fish described in 1949:

{{Category in year
| year = 1949
| cat = Fish described in
| parentcat = Fish described in the 20th century
| parentyrcat = Animals described in
}}

automatically adds Category:Fish described in the 20th century and Category:Animals described in 1949. Peter coxhead (talk) 07:28, 4 May 2018 (UTC)[reply]

Gianyar

Happy to be of help. Indonesia's one part of the world with which I'm not overly familiar, I'm afraid. I'd like to go, but it's probably a ways off yet. Past next year, at least. Good trip? --Ser Amantio di NicolaoChe dicono a Signa?Lo dicono a Signa. 05:20, 9 May 2018 (UTC)[reply]

excellent - enervating and very humid - forgotten how humid :) JarrahTree 07:35, 9 May 2018 (UTC)[reply]
Humid I can handle. I live just outside of Washington, DC - we live with humid for the bulk of the summer. I can't believe how dry it's been thus far. --Ser Amantio di NicolaoChe dicono a Signa?Lo dicono a Signa. 13:01, 9 May 2018 (UTC)[reply]
apology -didnt realise I was staying on my own talk :) - well perth, western australia (see my user page re perth austraia as a no no)is very dry with very low humidity, usually JarrahTree 13:48, 9 May 2018 (UTC)[reply]
No trouble at all - I follow the conversation wherever it leads me. :-)
Humidity around here usually starts ramping up right about now, and continues well through the beginning of September. But we had a colder-than-usual winter; I wonder if that's going to continue telling into the summer months. --Ser Amantio di NicolaoChe dicono a Signa?Lo dicono a Signa. 14:26, 9 May 2018 (UTC)[reply]

Question

[edit]

How do you WP:PROD a section of an article rather than the whole article? I could be BOLD and delete the section, or polite and PROD it, except I don't know how to. (I'm referring to Lists of Archibald Prize finalists#Notable subjects. See my hidden comments from March 2017.) Pdfpdf (talk) 08:06, 11 May 2018 (UTC)[reply]

from my experience you cannot do what you would like - maybe you need to consider other methods JarrahTree 08:14, 11 May 2018 (UTC)
Hmmmm. Like using an AK-47, or White phosphorous? Thanks, Pdfpdf (talk) 08:21, 11 May 2018 (UTC)[reply]

You were lucky! I would have been in the lottery, but Gough stopped it just before it was my turn. What a choice set! For me it's a toss-up between ... nah - flame throwers win.
They might even be in the right order, nor not JarrahTree 09:39, 11 May 2018 (UTC)[reply]

Any comments on this? Pdfpdf (talk) 09:59, 11 May 2018 (UTC)[reply]
my understanding is that there is no possibilty that a (c) item is allowed in commons - it has to be identified as not having a (c) - and having CC or no claims a all - thanks for the link ~ JarrahTree 10:43, 11 May 2018 (UTC)[reply]

WikiProject Portals update, 11 May 2018

[edit]

We've grown to 73 members, and morale is high. Thank you for joining. Here is some news, and some tasks...

The RfC will be closed soon...

[edit]

2018-05-11: preparations are being made to close the RfC. See Wikipedia:Administrators' noticeboard/Requests for closure#Wikipedia:Village pump (proposals)/RfC: Ending the system of portals.

When there, be sure to notice the consultation link.

We're trying to get a prototypical single-page portal developed in time to show the RfC closers before they make their final decision. You can help. It's Portal:Humanism. So far, we've applied selective transclusion (automation) to excerpts, and have made the following sections without subpages: intro, selected article, selected biography, categories, related portals, wikiprojects, things to do, and wikimedia. Eight down, 4 to go, plus 2 formatting subpages (not sure we can migrate those). Automating every section, would also be nice.

Main objectives

[edit]

Our main objectives currently, are:

  1. Replace static excerpts with selective transclusions, so that the excerpts always stay fresh (that is, match the source content). We are now doing this on the portal base page as much as possible, to reduce the number of subpages that are needed. See #2...
  2. Migrate the functions of subpages to the portal base pages. There are around 150,000 subpages in portal space. We aim to make these obsolete by using templates and other calls from the portal base pages.
  3. Improve portal design to make portals self-update. Semi-dynamic sections update from a static list, as used in {{Transclude random excerpt}}. Fully-dynamic sections would update from a list maintained elsewhere on Wikipedia, like a category. We haven't found a way to do this yet, other than to create a bot (which we will probably need to do).

Maintenance pass #1: Upgrading the intro section

[edit]

The intro section of many portals transcludes an "Intro" subpage that has an excerpt in it.

We're replacing that with a selective transclusion directly in the intro section, bypassing the subpage. Though, there's a little more to it...

For instructions, see: Wikipedia:WikiProject Portals#Transclude intro excerpt directly on the portal base page.

Please skip Portal:American Civil War, as that is specifically being maintained by hand.

Maintenance pass #2: Obsoleting the Wikimedia subpages

[edit]

One of the sections on many portals links to sister projects on the subject. This needlessly takes a subpage. The subpage can be made obsolete by using the template {{Wikimedia for portals}} directly on the portal base page.

This has been done for several hundred portals so far.

See Wikipedia:WikiProject Portals#Obsolete a Wikimedia subpage for instructions.

Maintenance pass #3: calling the category tree from the portal base page

[edit]

Certes figured out how...

{{subst:Text|<category|tree>}}{{subst:PAGENAME}}{{subst:Text|</categorytree>}}

For more information, see the thread Wikipedia:WikiProject Portals#Rendering PAGENAME inside categorytree tag doesn't work (it does now).

More to come...

[edit]

In the meantime, see ya around the portals!    — The Transhumanist   15:34, 11 May 2018 (UTC)[reply]

Perth

[edit]

Couldn't resist coming on your talk page about Perth. Anyone who knows any geography has heard of Perth in Western Autralia. So if someone says Perth Australia it's understood to be the one in Western Australia unless stated otherwise. Just Perth by itself though could be anywhere. The original one in Scotland or Perth in Ontario and many others I'm sure. And hundreds other examples in North America. In Canada if you say Windsor, it's Windsor Ontario even though there's a Windsor in Quebec. London could be a bit confusing - do you mean London, Ontario or the one in England? Ontario is a province of Canada unless specified otherwise like the city in California called Ontario. Hey it's nice to meet you. SlightSmile 01:02, 19 May 2018 (UTC)[reply]

That seems reasonable. I would say it's a case by case basis. If I'm talking to someone in a quick in out hello see ya later chat and for some reason Perth in Australia came up it would be unhelpful clutter to specifiy Western Australia. Maybe that's a silly example. I knew an Aussie ages ago from Perth and it never dawned on anyone that it was anywhere other than Western Australia. This is just me guessing, it could even refer to the general area around Perth in southwestern Western Australia. I can't remember what, so much stuff happening in the world - wasn't there a news event there this week? But in most scenarios it probably is best to narrow down the location - why not. That's news to me that some people consider Van Diemen's Land to be a separate country from Nieuw Holland (I'm being funny with the old names). SlightSmile 02:06, 19 May 2018 (UTC)[reply]
