NBC STRIKE

NBC STRIKE HEADS TO CABINET

THE strike by Namibian Broadcasting Corporation (NBC) workers resulted in an emergency Cabinet Treasury Committee meeting.

This came after nearly a week of talks between the Ministry of Information and Communication Technology and the NBC management could not salvage the situation. Following committee meeting, Cabinet was expected to decide whether to approve the release of funding to increase the salaries of striking NBC workers. Calle Schlettwein, the Deputy Minister of Finance, confirmed the meeting.

EMPLOYEES WANTS AN INCREMENT

Namibian Broadcasting Corporation will contribute 60 percent to housing allowances while employees will contribute the remaining 40 percent. Transport allowance will also be increased from N$430 to N$490 across the board. Rental allowances will increase by 100 percent over a three-year period in which the first year’s rent allowance would be increased by 50 percent, the second year 25 percent and third year another 25 percent.

NBC WORKERS HAVE NO CONFIDENCE IN NAPWU

Namibia Public Workers Union , the union that is the bargaining agent in NBC, is apparently in cahoots with the management of the national broadcaster to deny workers a salary increment. The workers of NBC have appointed a committee to represent the workers since their workplace union representatives of NAPWU are not only denying them the right to hold a meeting within the NBC premises, but also declaring their action as illegal.

NBC EMPLOYEES END STRIKES

WINDHOEK - The week-long strike that silenced the Namibian Broadcasting Corporation (NBC) radio and television services ended at mid-day. NBC Director-General went live with an announcement welcoming staff, saying: “We hope this will not be repeated in our lifetimes. You behaved very responsibly throughout this difficult period and we appreciate that.”
