Throwing around a word like "certainly" in such a context is a sure sign of childish naivete (yes—I used the word "sure"—quite similar, isn't it?). Hardly surprising when the person using it was born so recently (1985, your user page says). The argument in that article is beautiful and is central to the subject. As I said on the talk page, I sometimes suspect that those who say things like that think that articles like this are merely about technicalities. Hard to believe someone would be so silly as to think a thing like that, but non-mathematicians think differently from the rest of us. Michael Hardy (talk) 20:40, 16 March 2009 (UTC)
- I have responded to you on the talk page, where this belongs. I wasn't aware that at the age of 24 I am not past the point of getting ridiculous ad-hominem "you're young, what do you know?" attacks. Also, not that it matters since it's completely irrelevant, I am working on my PhD in mathematics so I'm not really a "non-mathematician". JokeySmurf (talk) 21:00, 16 March 2009 (UTC)
Well, you leave me puzzled as to what you're trying to say about that article. We've often seen comments saying "We all know this is true so why should we care how it's proved; delete the article!" and sometimes "This is about math, so delete it!", but apparently that's not where you're coming from. You mention that Cayley–Hamilton theorem. In that case an article about the proof would be separate from the main one about the theorem. In some cases that's appropriate but I don't see that it would be for that theorem. In the case of proof that holomorphic functions are analytic, there's not a separate page about the theorem and I see no need for two separate pages—one on the theorem and one on the proof. And in some ways the proof rather than the bare statement seems to be the enlightening part. I created the page five year ago and the one comment on it that I remember was from someone saying he was glad the article was there. Could it be that you consider the topic too narrow for a whole article? That could be true if this were a traditional printed and bound encyclopedia, but Wikipedia can afford a lot more space than those can. Michael Hardy (talk) 21:23, 24 March 2009 (UTC)
- I've replied on the talk page now. Sorry for the delay, I wanted to give it some time before discussing it again. Long story short: things look OK to me now. JokeySmurf (talk) 01:11, 25 March 2009 (UTC)
