Important Notes Before Editing City Articles

[edit]

If you would like to edit city articles, please review the following to get a better idea of what to include:

  1. All city articles MUST follow this guideline for layout and content: Wikipedia:USCITY
  2. Please examine these city examples: Lock Haven, Pennsylvania; Stephens City, Virginia; Kent, Ohio; Tulsa, Oklahoma; Grand Forks, North Dakota.
  3. Please do NOT add text that sounds like a realtor advertisement, but instead write like a neutral-party encyclopedia.
  4. Please read the editing tutorial and new contributor help page before editing the first time.
  5. How to cite sources by adding references? Add reference links or someone may delete your text. <<<<<<<<<<<
  6. What is Verifiability?

You need to merge this article back with the Grant County, Kansas article. • SbmeirowTalk01:10, 2 March 2012 (UTC)[reply]

The way things usually work on wikipedia is that once a section has grown to a large size, then people can discuss breaking it off into a new article. The history in the Grant County, Kansas article is currently NOT large enough to be split off. • SbmeirowTalk01:21, 2 March 2012 (UTC)[reply]
Per Wikipedia recommendations, when a page gets large, such as History segments can become, it is recommended to put the History in an article by itself. You don't realize we are just getting started, and when finished it will fall into this category. The same may apply to Ulysses, Kansas, but I am working primarily on Grant County right now; we can always merge them back together if it in the end a separate page is not warranted. Just Grant County is probably several weeks project, maybe a few months, and the primary source for this information is the "Bible" of Grant County Kansas history book that is over 583 pages long. I'm very glad that you want to expand the history for your county and towns in the area!!! As you stated "when a parge gets large enough" is different than goals of making it large, big difference, because at this moment it isn't too big. Far too many people say they are going to build a mountain but quit early. I'm not here to stop you, but instead passing along information of how things typically work on wikipedia. I put in a request to delete the article primarily because the history in the main article has not grown large enough to split off. • SbmeirowTalk01:53, 2 March 2012 (UTC)[reply]
Yes, I noticed that you edits reference a printed book, which I'm sure is a great book, but you will need to cite more source on wikipedia. Typically wikipedia doesn't like an article to have ONE PRIMARY reference, especially when it's a book the rest of us can't look at online to validate your edits. I've had the same problem with my home town and home county, but still try very hard to tract down and add references to online material. • SbmeirowTalk02:02, 2 March 2012 (UTC)[reply]
Look at the articles for my home town and county that I've been expanding. By no means are they incredible, but their history sections aren't split off yet. The Peabody article is farther along and more refined than the Marion County article, but I still need to expand the county article a lot more. These would likely be farther along, but I've been off cleaning up the articles for every city and county in Kansas. • SbmeirowTalk02:14, 2 March 2012 (UTC)[reply]
Peabody - June 2010 and Now.
Marion County - June 2010 and Now.
The Kansas Historical Society has some information that you can use as references in Wikipedia. see http://www.kshs.org/search/index/query:%22grant%20county%22

First let me say all of your efforts regarding maintaining numerous Kansas cities/counties is VERY appreciated; as a professional mainframe computer programmer / systems analyst from the past, I am very well aware of the time, effort, level of detail and tediousness of this type of work to commit information to digital format.

My own paternal ancestors, low german dutch russian mennonites got off the train at Peabody when they immigrated from southern Russia (now lower Ukraine, Crimea) in 1874 and settled south of Hillsboro Kansas. I have cousins all over Marion County (may even be a distant cousin of yours, who knows ?), and am somewhat familiar with said history as it applies to Marion County, but don't consider myself to be qualified to play a major role in documenting any of it on such places as Wikipedia above and beyond what has already been done

My situation is that I volunteered my Wikipedia account and time/effort to the Grant County Museum (The Historic Adobe House, Grant County, Kansas) to commit the bulk of our local history to Wikipedia for posterity, as none of them were familiar with the global Wikipedia project. I have been trying to encourage them to get up to speed with Wikipedia, so they can take over this project, but at this time, I am the only one committed to actually doing it, although they are seeing the potential and provide assistance as needed. This project is still so much in its infancy that we are still discussing the legalities involved, copyright permissions, etc. But I pretty much have their permission to publish to Wikipedia informtion from the two sources I have used so far.

This is not the only iron I have in the fire, and my health is poor, so I can not devote the time to this project that it deserves, but currently I am trying to get it started with hopes they will pick up more of the load and maintain it as an ongoing project of the Grant County Historical Society/Museum, etc. There will be days when no changes appear, but that does not mean the project has been abandoned. Lately, in the interest of showing them the potential I have been trying to do something everyday, but nearly everything I have submitted so far needs significant expansion and some revision, and most of the bulk of information hasn't even been touched yet.

So please do not jump to conclusions about status and progress. I appreciate your assistance and input, but let's work together instead of against each other.

I also realize that normally article workups should be done in the sandbox, preferably until they are "publication" ready, but the situation is complicated in that multiple articles are being updated all at the same time, but only one sandbox exists as I understand it, plus, the people I am working with, having no Wikipedia accounts or knowlege of the details of article editing pretty much have to review my work in the public format.

summary of position:

this article as of this date is still not complete, but already exhibits size dimensions that preclude its merging into the proposed merge page. Wikipedia recommendations for large sections, such as historical sections, of a given page be broken off into separate "History of ..." articles, which is exactly the approach and technique method used and employed by the contributor of historical information for Grant county Kansas who created this page.
