Untitled[edit]

Exactly. Should be required reading for every editor before they are allowed to make their first edit. ++Lar: t/c 05:16, 29 April 2008 (UTC)[reply]

good stuff...[edit]

I think this is great too... hopefully the start of something really powerful and useful around here! cheers, Privatemusings (talk) 06:37, 30 April 2008 (UTC)[reply]

  • Ouch, what a nice essay. Seldom does anyone so succinctly capture everything in a short essay like this. These sentiments are getting more urgent with every day. Merzul (talk) 07:24, 15 May 2008 (UTC)[reply]
  • Add me too. This is the first I've run across it. Very valuable and extremely well put. duff 20:54, 29 May 2011 (UTC)[reply]

First sentence - tribute?[edit]

That first sentence sounds familiar: "The purpose of Wikipedia is to create a high-quality, free-content encyclopedia in an atmosphere of camaraderie and mutual respect among contributors." Is that a tribute to someone who recently left? Carcharoth (talk) 17:02, 30 April 2008 (UTC)[reply]

It wasn't consciously intended as such, as I had written the essay before his departure was announced. I borrowed the wording here for much the same reason that I've used it in drafting arbitration rulings—I think it's one of the best-written and most succinct statements of our purpose that's been put forward.
I suppose it's fitting that it might be considered a tribute now, though; he certainly deserves all of those that we can give. Kirill (prof) 01:00, 1 May 2008 (UTC)[reply]

alternate opening as per Geometry guy[edit]

  • see diff: "Our readers come to Wikipedia expecting to find patchy and inaccurate articles with inadequate sources, original research and pointless trivia. We must strive to ensure they are pleasantly surprised..." Ling.Nut (talk) 14:54, 15 June 2008 (UTC)[reply]
Heh. ;-) Kirill (prof)

Good essay[edit]

Glad to see that there are still people here with a clear-headed and insightful view of what Wikipedia is and should strive to be. Nice work: keep writing!  :) Antandrus (talk) 17:11, 15 June 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Thanks! Kirill (prof) 21:19, 15 June 2008 (UTC)[reply]
Yeah, I agree with Lar. This should be required reading for every new editor. We should add it to the "welcome to Wikipedia" template. Cam (Chat) 03:53, 22 June 2008 (UTC)[reply]

minor nutshell suggestion[edit]

currently: "Wikipedia editors must act with an appropriate level of professionalism towards readers, other editors, and the subjects of articles." suggest: "Wikipedia editors must act with professionalism towards readers, other editors, and the subjects of articles." But it's very minor. I almost didn't say anything...--Asdfg12345 15:31, 23 June 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Or simply "act professionally"? AGK 22:47, 11 December 2008 (UTC)[reply]
