Bot tasks for WikiProject Films

I would like to finalize the bot tasks for WikiProject Films for submission; the tasks so far are listed here. Are any of them problematic to accomplish? Do any of them need to be more specific on a technical level? I'd like to push for the bot request to be made since discussion appears to have tapered off. Using 3D animation is a great idea, I can't believe no one did this earlier. The animation does a brilliant job illustrating what a dolly zoom is. Some suggestions:

1. I think the funky colors are unnecessary
2. Maybe you could make the balls into some other shape to make it stand out more against the blob person

Thanks. I agree with 1 - it was just a simple colour scheme to run some tests. Once I have the basics down, I can move towards making it more realistic as an image, which should also tackle point 2.

As for other types of shot, any particular suggestions? I can't see anything obvious in that category, I'm afraid. One that springs to my mind is where there's a narrow depth of field and the focal point shifts between two objects/people in an otherwise static scene to change the "focus" of the viewer. But I don't know what that's called or even if there's an article on it. GDallimore (talk) 13:07, 22 October 2010 (UTC)

I think what you're describing is racking focus (doesn't have any illustrations yet). Other articles that could use an animation are tilt, tracking shot, whip pan and panning. - Kollision (talk) 08:48, 31 October 2010 (UTC)

Hi. Since this has gone off-topic I thought I'd move it here for easier watching.

I've got hold of a free 3D female model (lucky me) and have started experimenting. I'm starting with something simple and will hopefully be uploading a video of Three-point lighting by the weekend. After that, I can try things like pan and tilt. Whip pan is likely to be out of the question: it's a technique that only works due to physical limitations of the equipment so attempting to recreate it in a computer would only be a (potentially misleading) simulation.

Here we go. The lighting states need a bit of fiddling - fill light should be softer and rim light needs to light more of the top of the head. Other than that, any thoughts? GDallimore (Talk) 02:40, 5 November 2010 (UTC)

Regarding your newer video, it looks good. Not sure if it would be better, but maybe you try just "switching on/off" the lights rather than fading in and out. And I think the second half of the video where all three lights are used needs to go a little bit slower. Other than that, good work.- Kollision (talk) 05:08, 8 November 2010 (UTC)

I'm guessing you're referring to the instances where I changed the word "movie" to "film" in the article. A film is the same thing as a movie, on Wikipedia we mainly use "film" because it is more professional. - Kollision (talk) 00:16, 10 November 2010 (UTC)

Crusoe

Why did you remove Pauline Kael's remarks on deschanel's film Crusoe. Wouldn't they fit in the critical reception section o.k?. Whats wrong with her remarks? Sayerslle (talk) 21:20, 24 December 2010 (UTC)

I made the judgement to remove her comments because there were some problems with it. Firstly, there was no attribution in the prose (eg. "Pauline Kael said"), it was just a quote dumped in the article. Secondly, it was quite a long quote. And thirdly, the quote was not the best because it flipped frequently between describing the film (which we don't want), describing Deschanel (which we also don't want) and the actually film criticism. However, looking back at it now I can see how these issues can be fixed and have reinstated her comments in edited form. - Kollision (talk) 02:20, 25 December 2010 (UTC)

Was not aware that we had a procedure for questioning the articles on talk prior to bringing to FAR. The short challenge seems more reasonable based on that. (Not 100% sure that is the way to go, just saying much more understandable. And then that you could write down everything wrong with it. No worries. This is my first FAR submission so I wasn't quite sure how much to write. The FAR instructions just says to write "your reason(s) for nominating the article, specifying the FA criterion/criteria that are at issue" and I looked at the other FAR nominations and their opening remarks seemed quite short as well. I should probably have explained why I felt the article failed the comprehensiveness criteria in greater detail though. - Kollision (talk) 11:31, 28 January 2011 (UTC)

You were following the normal procedure. I may have a little bit of a disagreement with the normal procedure in that it seems not self-consistent. We say that the purpose of FAR is to save the articles. But allowing peremptory challenges does not lean towards saving the article.

The other thing is it's just hard to tell from a sentence or two if the challenge is likely justified. I think the nominating de-lister ought to take it on himself to write a little exec summary of why he thinks it should be delisted, so others have some of that work done for them. Otherwise it is just a flag that says "go read the article yourself". I just don't think that is time-efficient. And I think if the delister fleshes out his rationale a bit, it helps the whole process be more concrete and meaningful.

Don't think there is a need for a "general" review unless we think the peice is just "generally" flawed and that why nominating. Realistically I doubt we take too many stars away because of a couple prose boners (even if we stop from giving stars for that reason)! So I would do that more in the context of a general rehabilitation, where the article is being upgraded already (i.e. the saver is present).

Other benefit of just explaining in more quantification the rationale for the delist is it gives us a little more feel for how far away the thing is. Not saying you have to express it this way, but knowing if it's a one day job or a one week job helps any "rescue squad" type decide if they will make the effort. Think this is reasonable in the context about FAR being about "hoping to save the article by upgrade". This is speculative, but I find that when I write down a hit list and sorta turn it into...well the beginning...the skeleton of a work plan that it motivates me to do the work. I see the size and the main items. I bet there are some delisters who would even say to heck with it and turn into the article saver! And not saying you should.

I think it's fine to note that the author is away. I apologize, I read it like a rationale for why to kill the thing (because the saver is gone! ;-)) Would maybe just do it in a separate para and not make it a rationale for delist but more a discussion of how you've tried to help the article (note the 24DEC outreach) and what you expect to go down in the FAR. It's a subtle thing and no biggie honest. Probably the "veterans" knew what you meant.TCO (talk) 17:44, 28 January 2011 (UTC)

Hello Kollision. Just wanted to say thanks for your work on the plot section of the film The Fall. Considering the narrative of the film that plot section is a tough one to cut down and I think you did a good job. Thanks also for adding the pictures of the locations. I have a purely aesthetic suggestion. I think that the pics might look better if the are arranged vertically instead of horizontally. I guess that I am just used to that arrangement in most WikiP articles. I also think that the pics could be a bit bigger if they were vertical. This is just a suggestion and if you prefer them the way they are than that is fine with me. On another note I have found some clips from Yo Ho Ho at Youtube and it is interesting to see parts of the film that inspired Tarsem. Thanks for your time and cheers. Thanks for the feedback. I think the Filming locations list should be converted into prose. That's why I've made the images horizontal, as a way to encourage that.
